Meet a teacher - Margot Sehlstedt-Persson

Published: 1 March 2020

Hi there, who are you?

My name is Margot Sehlstedt-Persson and I work as a senior lecturer in Wood Physics at LTU in Skellefteå. I mainly work with research in Wood Physics in various fields which involves understanding the interaction between wood and moisture, and how the wood responds to various processes which it is exposed in the production chain. I have mainly worked with wood drying, thermal modification, waterproofing and durability issues.

In what courses do students meet you?

I teach the course "Wood Material Science, Anatomy and Mechanical Characteristics"

How are you as a teacher?

Well prepared, engaged and pedagogical. I strive to put things in context so students understand what they are actually doing to build knowledge about! I dare to try new ways to teach and examine.

What is the best thing about teaching?

Above all, I like to teach. I appreciate meeting with students whether it be in the classroom or with the help of various types of distance-based techniques. I get inspired by seeing students grow in knowledge and develop as individuals - that's my reward.

What do you want students to learn from your classes?

I myself am quite fond of wood as a fascinating biological, clever and unpredictable material and I want to convey this to the students. Arouse their interest and curiosity so that those with a solid understanding of wood want to dive further into how to overcome the difficulties with this multi-variable material in production processes and products.

Why do you think one should read the Master in Wood Technology at LTU in Skellefteå?

The master program in wood technology provides a genuine ground for people who want a future in an industry with huge environmental and technical advantages - but also faces great challenges. We need well-educated "wood people" who take up these challenges. International recruitment and students that are involved in industry-related research makes this educuation exciting!

What do you do on your leisure time?

Paints and draws frantically from time to time. I train spinning and aerobics at Friskis & Svettis. Cross-country skiing, hunt moose and of course follows Skellefteå AIK in icehockey. And soon it's off to Botswana again to scout for animals in the Kalahari Desert
