Increased number of first-choice applicants
Interest in university studies at Luleå University of Technology is increasing. When registration for the autumn semester closed, the number of first-choice applicants for education programs had increased by 19 percent and for independent courses by seven percent.
According to the official figures from the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR), the total number of first-choice applicants increased by 13 percent, which is higher than the national average of eight percent.
"We're pleased to see the positive application numbers for the upcoming autumn semester. Many of our programs and courses are performing well, which is exciting. At the same time, we're aware that there are challenges to address. The application numbers are influenced by many factors, some within our control and others not," says Birgitta Bergvall Kåreborn.
"Our current students are our primary ambassadors, and their engagement is valuable in showcasing our programs in a positive light. The return to our regular routines in both education and student life after the pandemic is a step in the right direction. Both students and staff have done and continue to do fantastic work to keep our programs attractive, even though it doesn't always result in higher application numbers."
Technical education programs have increased by nearly 16 percent. In the national comparison of the number of first-choice applicants for engineering programs, Luleå University of Technology remains in sixth place. The top five are KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Lund University, Chalmers University of Technology, Linköping University and Uppsala University.
The work continues
The admissions unit is now starting the process of reviewing the eligibility of applicants and contacting them via email. The emails are segmented based on the chosen study location or distance learning and have content tailored to the respective target groups.
In July, the admission figures will be finalized. Contact with admitted students will be made through welcome text messages, postcards, emails and social media. A student will be hired to staff the Service Point during the summer to be able to answer the admitted students' questions via phone and email.
