Jing Ma

Profile

Jing Ma is a Senior Lecturer in the group of Architecture and the Built Environment at Luleå University of Technology. Her research focuses on applying Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spatial analysis, and sustainable urban development. She is particularly interested in green–blue infrastructure, urban nature, spatial accessibility, and the relationships between the built environment, human wellbeing, and quality of life. Her current research examines how spatial evidence can help identify inequalities in access to urban resources, improve understanding of urban patterns, and support evidence-based planning and decision-making.

Before joining LTU, she completed a Master of Landscape Architecture and a PhD in Architecture at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Her doctoral research developed GIS-based approaches for assessing accessibility to green–blue infrastructure, bringing together landscape architecture, urban planning, and advanced spatial analysis. She contributed to research projects in both the United Kingdom and New Zealand that examined how urban nature and green infrastructure can improve human life and wellbeing.

At LTU, she currently teaches Sustainable Urban Development, Urban Spaces, Introduction to QGIS, and participates in teaching Urban Design and ArcGIS Pro. Her teaching connects theoretical perspectives on cities, landscapes, and sustainability with practical training in geospatial technologies. She supports students in critically examining urban processes, managing and analysing spatial data, producing effective maps and visualisations, and bringing awareness of the social and environmental dimensions of urban development.
