Architecture
Architecture research includes building design, urban and traffic planning, where aesthetics is joined with functional, technical, practical and economic dimensions in relation to people, sustainability, landscape, and the built environment.
We use design and planning methods to address the functional, infrastructural, and aesthetic challenges of the built environment and landscape. We work in an interdisciplinary way, collaborating with subjects such as computer science, physiotherapy, building production, and musical performance. The Architecture Research Group is also responsible for the “urban track” and several courses within the Master of Science in Architectural Engineering.
We investigate major societal challenges and develop innovative knowledge applicable to planning processes, urban and building performance, and traffic solutions. The group has a growing portfolio of projects in areas such as circular urban and building processes, energy efficiency and positive energy districts, urban health and architectural quality, heritage and urban transformation, as well as traffic safety and accessibility.
We collaborate with stakeholders including the Swedish Transport Administration, Piteå Kommun, Skellefteå Kommun, SWECO, Region Norrbotten, and Luleå Kommun. Our academic partners include RISE, Politecnico di Torino, the University of Amsterdam, and the Free University of Brussels. Our research is supported by funders such as Formas, Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Authority, JPI Urban Europe, and EU Interreg.
The Architecture Research Subject
The Architecture Research Group conducts research and provides both undergraduate and postgraduate education with a strong emphasis on sustainable urban environments. The group consists of around 30 members, including teachers, researchers, and doctoral students, and has an annual turnover of approximately 30 million SEK.
