Swedish Forest Industries / Swedish Wood
The agreement between the Swedish Forest Industries and Swedish Wood and Luleå University of Technology was signed in 2020.
The purpose of the collaboration
- strengthen long-term cooperation in forest industry education, research, and innovation.
- ensure long-term stability and positive development for the University's activities in these areas
- forest-based material science and process technology with a particular focus on the wood mechanics industry.
- increase the competitiveness and attractiveness of both the forest industry and Luleå University of Technology.
The initiatives and projects decided initially are expected to lead to continued investments in areas that both deepen the cooperation between the forest industry and Luleå University of Technology and support the transition to a bio-based economy and a sustainable society and sustainable growth.
Cooperation in education also includes joint activities in student recruitment, development of new forms of education and learning, and improved opportunities for employee mobility between the parties.
Collaboration in research and innovation shall take place within the value chain and focus on areas that the parties believe are linked to important societal challenges, have strong growth potential, and can lead to national and international positioning and visibility. The areas shall include both technical and social science research and innovation.
Furthermore, collaboration should be characterised by ecological, social and economic sustainability as well as an equality and gender perspective in order to utilise the full potential of the people working in the partners' organisations.
Some concrete initiatives and activities
- The Swedish Forest Industries and Swedish Wood support the CT Wood research programme started at the University through funding, participation in research projects, assignments and information dissemination.
- The Swedish Forest Industries and Swedish Wood are investigating the possibility of contributing a number of scholarships to facilitate top recruitment of students from Europe and third countries.
- Luleå University of Technology is working to develop attractive courses in industrial wood construction with a process focus, which includes the production of input materials such as beams, windows, doors, sawn timber, CLT etcetera.
- The University and the companies linked to The Swedish Forest Industries and Swedish Wood work to strengthen collaboration by having students work on industry-related project tasks. Internships, ex-jobs and summer jobs are also important.
- The University, The Swedish Forest Industries and Swedish Wood are working together to develop a new model for lifelong learning where employees in the forest and wood industries can combine work and skills development and where the parties share the risk and financing. The Swedish Forest Industries and Swedish Wood have many years of experience of cooperation with the University.
