“I have already got a job in Cloud Security.”
Meet Malik Asad who came all the way from Karachi in Pakistan to Skellefteå city to study Information Security at Luleå University of Technology. He earned his Bachelor´s degree in Computer Science at Iqra University Karachi.
What was your main reason to study at Luleå University of Technology?
– When I was searching for a programme I discovered that the curriculum provided a comprehensive understanding of Information Security. It covers all the important topics such as Network Security, Cryptography, Secure Software Development, Risk Assessment, and Incident Response. You will get a solid foundation in both theoretical concepts and practical skills, preparing you for various roles in the industry.
Was it difficult to find a job?
– No, I have already begun working as Cloud Security Architect for one of the European leaders in cloud implementation, application development, managed services, and training. My work is to design security architectures for different customers and help them to improve their overall cloud security posture to mitigate the threats within the cloud environment. I am really looking forward to solving complex security challenges, contributing to secure cloud solutions, and working with cutting-edge technology.
In what way did the programme prepare you for a career in the information security business?
– The programme offers practical components such as labs, projects, and real-world case studies which allow students to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios. Through these experiences, students gain hands-on skills in areas like security architecture design, vulnerability assessment, security analysis, and security tool usage.
What´s your best experience from Luleå University of Technology?
– I have met lots of new people and created good friendships with classmates and peers during our time at university by sharing experiences working on group projects, extracurricular activities, and social events. One of the best things and what I’m truly grateful for is all the dedicated and passionate professor’s that have really inspired me and guided me. Because of them I now feel confident and have the skills to shape my future endeavours.
What was your first impressions when you arrived to Skellefteå?
– I was very excited at that time. The city's natural beauty, cultural attractions, and unique experiences have generated a sense of anticipation and adventure. I have experienced some region's natural beauty, particularly including outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, or skiing.
What cultural differences surprised you?
– Swedes are very welcoming and polite people, they really like their “Fika” break for coffee or tea, often accompanied by pastries or snacks. This is considered a social activity, providing an opportunity for colleagues, friends, or family members to connect and relax during the day, this is one of the cultural differences which you barely find in other cultures.
Do you have advice for anyone who is considering studying Information Security?
– Gain foundational knowledge before starting the programme, it can be helpful to have a solid foundation in Computer Science, Networking, Programming, and Cybersecurity fundamentals. Acquiring these foundational skills beforehand will allow you to grasp the more advanced concepts and dive deeper into the subject matter.
– Pursue certifications and consider obtaining relevant certifications in Information Security such as Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP) and Microsoft Azure Security Technologies Certification which can enhance your credibility, validate your skills, and make you stand out to employers.
