Meet Alexander Bakumenko who after graduated from Master Programme in Data Science works as a Doctorate Graduate Research assistant at Clemson University, USA. Read about his career path and what the Data Science programme has meant to him.
Hi Alexander, can you tell me about your current job?
– My role as Doctorate Graduate Research Assistant at Clemson University, is quite dynamic and research-intensive. A typical day for me includes analysing complex datasets, developing, and refining machine learning models, and exploring the intricacies of explainable AI. What I find most rewarding is the ability to translate our findings into understandable terms that can aid in biomedical advancements. Currently, I'm working on a particularly exciting project that involves using explainable AI to interpret biomedical data, which could have significant implications for patient care. This project, like many others, is not just intellectually stimulating but also has the potential for real-world impact, which is incredibly satisfying. What I also really enjoy is the collaboration with a diverse team, bringing together different skills and viewpoints to solve pressing problems.
Can you share your journey from studying the programme to where you are today?
– My career path has been a fusion of academia and industry from the start. While pursuing my Master's in Data Science, I was working as a Data Scientist at IKEA of Sweden. This dual role was challenging but rewarding, as it allowed me to apply real-world data science solutions in a corporate setting while enhancing my academic knowledge. The challenges I faced included balancing the rigorous demands of a full-time job with the academic responsibilities of my Master's programme, so the transition from studying to full-time work was more of an evolution than a shift. The setbacks and successes I encountered along the way were part of a learning curve that prepared me for the demands of a doctorate research position at Clemson University, USA.
What did you think about studying Data Science?
– Looking back on my academic and professional journey, the decision to study Data Science at Luleå University of Technology has been a cornerstone of my success. The programme not only equipped me with the necessary skills and knowledge but also instilled a sense of community and collaboration that has been invaluable in my career. The friendships and professional relationships formed during this time have been a source of ongoing support and inspiration. Studying Data Science was an enlightening and a transformative experience. The field's interdisciplinary nature, which spans statistics, computer science, and domain-specific knowledge, offered a profound understanding of how to turn data into actionable insights. The programme was particularly impressive due to its comprehensive curriculum, which provided a balanced mix of theoretical knowledge and practical application. This equipped me with a versatile skill set that is applicable in various sectors, making the pursuit of Data Science not just a study of algorithms and data, but a gateway to making a tangible impact on the world.
How did the study location impact your experience and development as a student?
– The study location in Luleå greatly influenced my development, offering a robust educational framework and a collaborative atmosphere that was conducive to in-depth research and learning. The ability to study remotely was a significant advantage, allowing me to integrate full-time work with my academic pursuits, fostering a practical understanding of Data Science in action. One of the most significant achievements during my time at Luleå University of Technology was completing my Master's thesis in the field of Data Science. The project was carried out under the guidance of Professor Ahmed Elragal and in partnership with an industrial collaborator. This endeavour was not just academically enriching; it led to a publication that underscored the practical application and academic value of the research I conducted.
What do you believe is the future for those who have studied Data Science?
– The future for Data Science graduates is bright, with the field expanding into new domains and technologies continuously emerging. The key to thriving in this dynamic environment is to remain flexible, continuously learn, and be willing to engage in interdisciplinary projects. The skills and insights gained from a Data Science education will open doors to diverse career paths, from academia to industry, each offering the chance to make significant contributions.
What would you say to someone who is considering studying Data Science?
– To those embarking on their journey in Data Science, my advice is to fully immerse yourself in the learning experience. Seek out projects that challenge you, engage with your peers and faculty, and look for opportunities to apply your skills in real-world settings. The field is rapidly evolving, and staying curious, adaptable, and collaborative will serve you well in your career.
