Bachelor Programme in Music

The Bachelor of Music programme focuses on developing your skills and musicianship. You will also enjoy performance opportunities in our fine concert venues and high-quality studios, providing important experience for your professional life or further studies.
The programme is intended for students who meet the general entry requirements (graduation certificate from upper-secondary school) and have significant prior musical experience. We offer an excellent artistic and academic environment, good rehearsal facilities, state-of-the-art recording equipment and a world-class concert hall. A Bachelor of Fine Arts degree qualifies you for further studies at the Master's level (60 credit or 120 credit programme) or a supplementary teacher education programme.
The programme, which comprises three years of full-time studies, offers the following specialisations: Jazz Musician, Classical Musician, Composition, Music Production and Songwriting, Rock Musician, Studio Musician, and Church Musician. All of the specialisations are taught in Swedish. The Classical Musician, Composition, and Church Musician specialisations are taught in English and Swedish. A large part of the programme content is devoted to the specialisation you have chosen. An opportunity for exchange studies is available during the second last semester of the programme.
The third year of study includes an artistic research project with musical and written components.
By collaborating with students from other programmes and specialisations, you can initiate your own projects. You can also apply to join the school's chamber choir, which presents high quality productions nationally and internationally.
The Bachelor's programme is offered with the following specialisations: Jazz Musician, Classical Musician, Composition, Music Production and Songwriting, Rock Musician, Studio Musician, and Church Musician.
The Classical Musician, Composition, and Church Musician specialisations are also open to international students.
Classical Musician
Studies in the Classical Musician specialisation give you the opportunity to develop your artistic abilities and identity in different musical and artistic constellations.
The specialisation is intended to develop your instrumental/vocal craftsmanship and your personal artistic profile. The focus is on your main instrument, but you will also participate in study activities involving other students. You can also supplement your program of study through electives and supplementary courses. Orchestral instrument and voice students have access to competent rehearsal pianists. Our students are offered generous lesson time with their principal teachers. Throughout the programme, individual instruction is interspersed with group lessons, internal and external concerts, and various orchestral and ensemble projects.
The programme includes three main perspectives:
1. Musical profile (instrument/vocals, ensemble)
2. The craft of music (music theory, keyboard harmony, ensemble conducting, introduction to music business, and survey of related arts)
3. Music and society, research process, and degree project.
The programme provides you with a good foundation for further studies at the Master's level (60 credit or 120 credit programme) or a supplementary teacher education programme. Our teachers have extensive teaching experience, and several are active both nationally and internationally as musicians, composers or conductors.
Composition
Studies in the Composition specialisation aim to develop your artistic profile as a composer through projects with professional ensembles, musicians, choirs and orchestras.
The composition specialization is focused on composition and arranging. Composition studies are based on projects, individual supervision and seminars. In the composition specialisation, you also study arrangement, orchestration, harmony, and counterpoint. Projects include practical work with various ensemble constellations, film and game music, and musical drama. In the Composition programme, we perform collaborative projects with professional ensembles and orchestras. You can also supplement your program of study through electives and supplementary courses.

2. The craft of music (music theory, keyboard harmony, ensemble conducting, introduction to music business, and survey of related arts)

Church Music
The Church Music specialisation prepare students for professional employment as church musicians, typically in the Church of Sweden.
Organ is the primary instrument for church music students. The program also includes a strong choral conducting component. Service playing is taught as a separate sequence of courses. Other courses include voice, keyboard harmony, and organ pedagogy. You will also participate in courses together with students from other concentrations. The School of Music in Piteå features a fine collection of instruments including the large concert hall organ built by Gerald Woehl in Studio Acusticum.
You can also supplement your program of study through electives and supplementary courses.
The programme includes three main perspectives:
1. Musical profile (organ, liturgical organ, conducting, piano chords)
2. The craft of music (music theory, voice)
3. Music and society, artistic research process, and degree project
If you continue your studies at the Master's level (120 credits) in solo organ or conducting, you can apply for a position as an A-level church musician in the Church of Sweden. Our teachers have extensive teaching experience, and several are active both nationally and internationally as musicians, composers or conductors.
