Do you have any tips for new students?
“Find friends you enjoy being with. I would never have managed my studies without my friends. No one understands everything from a lecture, but everyone can understand something. From my own experiences, it always worked best when I worked a lot with my classmates.”
What does it mean to work as a doctoral student?
“Being a doctoral student is a mix between being a student and an employee. I have an official position at the university, like any other company, but I am also a student at Luleå University of Technology. Primarily, I conduct research within my research area, but I also take courses concurrently. The courses vary. Some are directly related to my research area, while others cover philosophy, scientific writing, certification courses, etc. Part of my doctoral position also involves teaching courses in our undergraduate programs.”
What is the best thing about being a teacher?
“The best thing about being a teacher is being able to teach what I know and it helps me gain greater knowledge of my research area. It's always enjoyable to interact with students.”
What kind of tasks do you have in your current position?
“The majority of the time, I actually spend thinking. My main task is my research project, which requires a lot of mental effort. I have traveled for training and fieldwork that I then try to connect to my research question and own ideas. It's not entirely clear how this should be done, so it's an iterative process. I also spend a lot of time in the lab and some time on courses.”
“I research how various forces affect tunnel injection. Rocks consist of cracks that carry water. These cracks are sealed by injecting a liquid that hardens. In Sweden, cement is commonly used.”
What is the best thing about your job?
“The best thing about the job is the working conditions. Colleagues come from many different countries, so there are often interesting discussions during lunch and coffee breaks. Plus, the work is varied, which stimulates me, and I get to work pretty much whenever I want.”
