Master programme in Electrification
120 credits, programme, master's level, TMEEA
Be part of the newest wave of electrification, driven by the need for an efficient transition to a sustainable energy system and society. This MSc program offers you a holistic view of a range of aspects of electrification, including renewable electricity production and electric vehicle charging.
In this Master program you will approach the detailed understanding of the future electric power system with a system thinking perspective, but you will also get a holistic view of the electric power system as part of the energy system, the electricity and energy markets, and society. You will learn about the newest smart grid technologies and strategies, about the challenges with the integration of renewable electricity production, about flexibility with production, consumption and in the network, about electricity markets and about how energy policy impacts the electric power system.
The first year of the program provides some of the basic techniques needed, most of the knowledge needed to be part of the electrification, and holistic insight into energy systems and the links with society. The first year consists for a major part of classical teaching courses, with some project work, where we combine well-established teaching methods with state-of-the-art knowledge. During the second year, you will get the change to apply the knowledge from the first two years and to further specialize yourself during two small and one large project. These projects can be research-oriented and be done at the university, they can also be more applied or development-oriented and be done with industry. For these projects you can choice among the three research groups that are involved in this program: electric power engineering, electronic systems, and energy engineering. The second year contains two courses that give you advanced knowledge on two important conditions for electrification: the performance of the electricity supply (EMC, reliability, and power quality); and the economic drivers (electricity and energy markets).
You will be able to work in energy intensive industries, electrical companies, system operators, regulators, national/regional agencies, market operators, and consulting companies, but not limited to. Roles within research and development, operation, planning, and energy management where new technologies and strategies for decarbonization and sustainability are paramount. This program will also enable you to pursue third-cycle studies.
