Master programme in Exploration Geoscience
120 credits, programme, master's level, TMGPA
As our society moves away from fossil fuels, this program equips you with cutting-edge knowledge and skills in exploration geoscience that are highly sought after. Global exploration for natural resources, such as metals and minerals, is of great necessity in the ongoing societal transition.
The program starts with courses of a more general nature, like Exploration geoscience, Applied petrology and Geology of the Arctic. Thereafter the courses become gradually more focused and on topics such as ore deposit formation, structural geology and how GIS and geodata (including artificial intelligence and machine learning) can be used in advanced modelling of ore systems. The final year of the program deals with exploration methods and mining geology and is finalized with two project courses of which the last is your MSc final degree project that is typically done together with a company or industry. This industry collaboration, and that several individual course modules throughout the program are run at the unique and industrially active testbed Arctic Tests gives you plenty of opportunities to network with potential future employers.
Between year 1 and 2, you are given the chance to take a field-based summer course in the Skellefteå District in northern Sweden, one of Europe’s more important ore districts. The course is for 3 credits (ECTS) and is run by the ore geology group at Luleå University of Technology together with invited experts from the mining industry.
The program provides skills for working as a geologist / geophysicist in exploration for mineral resources. As geoscientific knowledge and skills are universal you can work anywhere in the world, as a consultant or for the industry. The university has networks all around the world which may offer possibilities for international MSc thesis work.
