Future Campus Luleå
Campus Luleå is being developed for the future. Over the coming years, a major investment will be carried out to create modern, sustainable and flexible environments for education, research and collaboration.
The development will take place in stages until 2034 and includes three new buildings, new outdoor spaces and a long term transformation of the entire campus area.
The aim is to create:
- modern and flexible premises
- robust and future proof laboratory environments
- attractive study environments
- energy efficient and sustainable buildings
- a more cohesive and vibrant campus
What does Future Campus Luleå involve?
Future Campus Luleå represents a phased development of the campus area. Buildings E, F and K will be removed and replaced with new buildings for education, research and workplaces. Building D has already been dismantled.
New buildings will be constructed in the G, D and F block. When Building E is removed, a new park or green space is planned for the site. At the same time, Buildings A, B and C will be retained, as will Regnbågsallén, which will continue to serve as the main spine of the campus.
The development aims to create a more cohesive and long term sustainable campus that meets the university’s needs both today and in the future.
Campus Luleå
Luleå University of Technology currently leases approximately 106,000 square metres of premises, distributed across several buildings.
What will be built?
Three new buildings will be constructed on campus: the D block, the F block and the G block.
The new buildings will strengthen the university’s activities and create modern, flexible environments for research, education and work. The objective is to develop premises that are sustainable in the long term, with low climate impact and a design that meets both current needs and future demands.
The G block with a focus on vibration sensitive research
The first building will bring together the university’s most vibration sensitive research equipment in a specially adapted environment. The building will comprise approximately 4,500 square metres and is scheduled for completion in 2029.
The equipment is currently dispersed across several buildings, primarily in buildings that are to be dismantled. The new facility will replace laboratories currently located in Buildings E and F and, to some extent, in Building C. Consolidating vibration sensitive equipment in one building will also increase flexibility in other campus buildings.
The building will have a robust internal core offering optimal conditions for precision measurements, experiments and technological development. Flexibility and adaptability are central principles, enabling the building to accommodate changing needs and new technologies as research evolves.
The D block for education and research
The D block will provide facilities for:
- laboratories
- offices
- study environments
- teaching rooms
- an arena for meetings and events
The building is scheduled for completion in late 2031 or early 2032.
The F block with laboratories, workshops and study environments
The F block will include facilities for:
- laboratories
- workshops and halls
- offices
- study environments
The aim is for the building to be completed around the turn of the year 2032 to 2033.
A new park on campus
A new park or green space is planned on the site of Building E. It will serve as an open meeting place and may also function as reserve land for future needs. According to the current plan, the park will be completed in 2034.
Will anything remain as it is today?
Regnbågsallén, which connects Luleå Science Park in the west with Porsö Centre in the east, will continue to serve as the main spine of the campus. The buildings and outdoor environment within the southern part of the campus, meaning the areas between Regnbågsallén and Universitetsvägen where Buildings A, B and C are located, will retain their existing structure.
Timeline
Timeline in brief
2026
Ground preparation works begin.
Construction of temporary pavilions.
2029
Completion of the first new building.
2031 to 2033
Completion of the D and F Quarters.
2034
The objective is for the entire Future Campus Luleå development to be completed.
Changes to traffic and accessibility
In connection with the development of Future Campus Luleå, through traffic on Laboratorievägen will be closed to the public in May or June 2026. The closure is a prerequisite for carrying out forthcoming groundworks and construction safely.
The change will not affect parking spaces along the road for those working at the university, but general through traffic and bus services will be diverted. Information about alternative routes and changes to public transport will be provided by Luleå Local Transport and Luleå Municipality.
Work is also under way to establish additional parking areas. New spaces are planned in front of the A Block, south of Teknikens Hus along Universitetsvägen, and near Kårshusgränd.
During the summer of 2026, works will also be undertaken to install a temporary district heating connection to Aula Aurora. The works will take place along Geogränd and Laboratorievägen from June to August. Excavation will be carried out in the pavement area, and traffic will be able to pass during the works, although some disruption to access may occur.
