Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn inaugurated as vice-chancellor
In a ceremony, held at Luleå University of Technology on Monday, Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn was inaugurated as new vice-chancellor. The same day former vice-chancellor Johan Sterte's portrait, painted by artist Kristina Nilsdotter, was shown for the first time.
Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn is the sixth vice-chancellor of Luleå University of Technology – the third woman on the post – since the university was established in 1971.
On Monday, the inauguration ceremony was held in Aula Aurora at Luleå University of Technology, in front of an audience of students, employees and guests from companies, municipalities, authorities and organizations.
The university's chamber choir, led by conductor Erik Westberg, performed and speeches were held by the chairman of the university board Eva Nordmark, former vice-chancellor Johan Sterte and Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn herself.
An attractive and sustainable society
She emphasized the important role the academia has for an open and democratic society.
– We are here to ensure education and research of highest possible quality, contributing to an attractive and sustainable society. It is our purpose and our meaning and that is why we are so important to the society we work in and are part of, said Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn in her inauguration speech.
Earlier in the day, the portrait of former vice-chancellor Johan Sterte was unveiled at Luleå University of Technology. It is a tradition that the departing vice-chancellor chooses which artist from the region to paint the portrait. Johan Sterte's choice fell on Kristina Nilsdotter, born in Luleå and settled in Nordmaling. Her work has been shown several times at Liljevalch's art gallery in Stockholm.
