35 million to data center / IT innovations
The northernmost region of Sweden could become world leading in data center and large-scale data management. This is in all cases the goal of Datacenter Innovation Region, one of the projects that recently was awarded funding from Strukturfondspartnerskapet för Övre Norrland.
– With our prerequisites, we have a unique opportunity to take a leading role in this area, says Jan-Olov Johansson, Project Manager at the Center for Distance-Spanning Technology at Luleå University of Technology.
The Datacenter Innovation Nord project with a total budget of SEK 30 million, of which half is funded through Strukturfondspartnerskapet för Övre Norrland, will last for three years. The project will focus on small and medium-sized companies whose business is within realm of data center businesses. It could either be about a separate data center that supplies infrastructure, hardware or software to a data center, or about companies whose business is based on access to a data center, such as computational and storage-intensive cloud services and large-scale data management. Luleå University of Technology is a single project partner and the project is funded by Tillväxtverket. Region Norrbotten, Region Västerbotten, länsstyrelsen i Västerbotten, Storuman Municipality, Lycksele Municipality and Nodepole.
Another project, Gender Smart Arena, with a total budget of SEK 5 million, is awarded 2.5 million by the Strukturfondspartnerskapet för Övre Norrland. The goal is to create an inclusive and innovative business model that provides better business for companies in the IT industry.
– Without gender equality companies will not get sustainable growth, says Paula Wennberg, Project Manager at the Center for Distance-Spanning Technology at Luleå University of Technology.
The Gender Smart Arena project will continue for two years, and the overall objective of the project is to contribute to smart and sustainable growth and employment in Norrbotten and Västerbotten. In addition to Luleå University of Technology, the project consists of the following partners and financiers: Arctic Group, BnearIT, Tromb, Luleå Municipality, Piteå Municipality, Skellefteå Municipality, Region Norrbotten, Region Västerbotten and the European Regional Development Fund.
Strukturfondspartnerskapet för Övre Norrland has prioritized eleven different projects, which together receive around SEK 128.6 million in EU support.
