Hear the audio environment before it is available
Arne Nykänen, Associate Professor of Engineering Acoustics at Luleå University of Technology, is working on a new project to develop sound for virtual 3D environments. The research will improve the tools available to understand how sound in buildings is perceived and affected by environment and architecture.
The project will focus on buildings and rooms for homes and offices, but the technology will also work for gyms, schools and other functions.
"We will provide the opportunity to hear sound environments before they exist, which will improve the conditions for making the right decisions in future construction and infrastructure projects," says Arne Nykänen.
Previously, Arne Nykänen has worked with audio applications in the automotive industry, where sound has long been used for, for example, warnings or reminders. His experiences from this in combination with computer game technology and psychoacoustics (the experience of sound experience) will result in prototypes to demonstrate VR sound.
"Realistic VR presentations will be used to demonstrate the potential of technology," says Arne Nykänen.
Research in the project "VR Based Tools for Designing Good Sound Environments" is being conducted with and on behalf of the consulting firm Tyréns and is financied by the Foundation for Strategic Research.
