New research topic: Robotics and AI
Luleå University of Technology establishes a new research subject: Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. The Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering will host the subject.
The subject Robotics and Artificial Intelligence aims to develop new robot systems focusing on advanced autonomy for improving the ability of robots to interact with the surrounding environment and humans during the execution of specific tasks.
According to Jonas Ekman, Head of the Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering, the establishment of the new subject is of great importance.
– We have successfully carried out research within this area for several years. Now we really emphasize the importance of this subject, says Jonas Ekman.
– This is a subject area that is growing, both nationally and internationally. For example, robotics and artificial intelligence has been identified by the European Commission as one of the most important subject areas in the upcoming Horizon Europe 2021–2017 research initiative.
As the university's previous research in robotics and AI, the new subject's research profile will be application-oriented. Autonomous vehicles, industrial robotics and automation and inspection robotics are some examples of current application areas that will be relevant to the research subject.
A Chair in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence will be appointed. Until then, George Nikolakopoulos, Professor of Control Engineering, will be acting as a Chair.
