Luleå University of Technology celebrates the Sami National Day
Luleå University of Technology celebrates the day by hoisting the Sami flag at all university locations: Luleå, Skellefteå, Piteå and Kiruna. Luleå University of Technology is the northernmost university within Sápmi in Sweden and is located on old winter pasture.
– Luleå University of Technology is active in the Sami areas and has research and education in several subjects that directly relate to Sami and indigenous peoples. It is with joy that we celebrate the Sami National Day, Cathrine Norberg says, Vice Vice-Chancellor at Luleå University of Technology.
The Sami National Day, 6 February, is common to all Sami, regardless of whether they live in Sweden, Norway, Finland or Russia. The date, 6 February, was chosen to honor the memory of the first Sami national meeting held in Trondheim on 6 February 1917, which brought together Sami, from north to south across national borders to discuss and shed light on common issues.
We also want to give examples of research and education at Luleå University of Technology with a special focus on the indigenous Sami people. At Luleå University of Technology, several research projects are underway that focus in particular on the Sami people, for example in the subjects istory, Swedish and Education, Industrial design, Nursing, edagogy and Jurisprudence.
