The University’s quality work gets positive assessment by the Swedish Higher Education Authority
The quality work at Luleå University of Technology gets a positive assessment by the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ). The overall judgement reads “approved” even though UKÄ has identified a few areas for improvement. This means that UKÄ assesses the quality work at the University to be essentially well described, well argued for and well-functioning in practice.
The Vice-Chancellor Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn is satisfied with the result and emphasises that the University works actively to maintain the high standard and seeks on-going improvement.
The assessment panel, appointed by UKÄ, has identified several strengths in the University’s quality work. The strengths include, for example, the systematic work on follow-ups and quality improvement, a specific quality council to support on-going development, and educational support for the improvement of courses and study programmes. Furthermore, induction activities for new students, gender equality initiatives, close relations between research and education, and collaboration with the surrounding society are identified as strengths.
"Assessments are always a good thing"
The assessment panel has also identified areas to improve. For instance, the University needs to describe how the process of on-going improvement works, how different governing documents are related and how to communicate internally the results from different reviews. In addition, the opportunities for elected representatives of undergraduate and graduate students to participate in different fora should be improved.
In their decision, UKÄ also emphasises the importance for the University to develop the quality assurance system and to analyse the information retrieval so that the system provides the best possible results in connection with the quality work.
“Assessments are always a good thing, as they let us know that we are on the right track and also what we can improve further”, the Vice-Chancellor Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn says.
Luleå University of Technology will report taken actions to UKÄ within two years.
