New research subject in mathematics and science education
The research subject Mathematics Education is being broadened and renamed to Mathematics and Science Education. Besides the broader approach, the cutting edge research on learning difficulties in mathematics within higher education continues, with the potential to solve international problems.
With the establishment of the new research subject, Luleå University of Technology takes a new approach to research and education in learning science.
“Science didactics is particularly important for primary teacher education, but it will also play an important role in the development of secondary teacher education. I see great opportunities for us to contribute, says Timo Tossavainen, Professor and Head of Subject for Mathematics and Science Education.
Strenghten the subject by recruitment and research education
During the autumn, a visiting professor will strengthen the subject, and there are plans of recruiting a professor and, at least, one lecturer.
“There are few universities in Sweden that are prominent within didactics in science. We will develop the subject in the long term and train researchers,” Timo Tossavainen continues.
Ongoing research on mathematics in higher education
At the same time as the science part is strengthened, mathematics continue to develop. A current issue in both Sweden and the rest of the world is lacking knowledge in mathematics among engineering students. Research is already underway at Luleå University of Technology and data are being collected from the engineering courses.
“If we can succeed in this, Luleå University of Technology will become prominent and profiled in mathematics didactics at a higher level. There is both a national and international need to develop this subject. If we can contribute to solving problems related to mathematics in higher education through research, it can make Luleå University of Technology internationally well known,” says Timo Tossavainen.
Collaborations with local schools
In addition to projects within higher education, research projects are already underway in collaboration with local schools.
“Our research and teaching support the teacher training courses. We also reach many of the region's mathematics and science teachers, this is very important for our continuous development,” says Timo Tossavainen.
