Meet our researchers: Sepideh Javanshir extracts gold without toxic chemicals
Sepideh Javanshir works as a postdoc in process metallurgy. She wants to contribute to the sustainable supply of critical metals and dreams of establishing her own research group.
Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?
"I have received my Ph.D. in the field of hydrometallurgy. My doctoral dissertation was about investigating hydrodynamics and kinetic parameters affecting gold extraction from copper anode slimes. After my PhD, I had the role of researcher and project manager in the area of extraction of precious metals (such as gold & silver) and critical metals (Li, Co, Mn, Ni) from primary and secondary resources by hydrometallurgical techniques (leaching, SX, IX and precipitation). Currently, I am working on the leaching of gold by a non-toxic reagent as a postdoctoral fellow in Process Metallurgy at Lulea University of Technology."
What makes your field so interesting?
"What makes my field so interesting is the diverse range of metals and minerals that can be recovered from various resources. The industry's constant need for these metals creates a dynamic and ever-evolving field. Each project presents unique challenges and requires innovative solutions, which keeps the work intellectually stimulating and exciting."
What is your dream as a researcher?
"As a researcher, my dream is to establish my own laboratory and research group. I aspire to work on industrial-scale projects that have a significant impact on advancing extraction technologies and contribute to the sustainable supply of critical metals. Collaborating with renowned national and international researchers would be a fantastic opportunity to exchange knowledge, share ideas, and make meaningful contributions to the field."
What is the most enjoyable part of your work?
"The most enjoyable aspect of my work is working with friendly and helpful staff who create a supportive and positive work environment. I think support from colleagues and supervisors plays a vital role in job satisfaction, boosting confidence and motivation. In addition, good facilities and equipment and a collaborative environment foster a sense of camaraderie and accomplishment".
