Checklist for new students
Below, you will find a checklist of what you as a new student need to do next. The lists look slightly different depending on the category of the student so choose the student group that applies to you.
For internal LTU purposes, Swedish citizens studying in a programme provided fully in English are also classified as “international” students. This does not affect your CSN rights or any other study rights, but it helps us to provide you a better tailored non-academic service for your programme.
Page is under construction for the second cycle studies for the autumn semester.

Visit the Service Point at your place of study (Luleå, Piteå, Skellefteå or Kiruna). You will be photographed by our staff, so you don’t need to bring any physical photos.
To get an LTU card, you must show valid identification (ID card, driver's license, passport) – for EU/EES citizens, your National ID card will suffice; for Swedish citizens, we also accept your driver’s license; all students who don’t have EU/EES citizenship need to show their valid passport. The LTU card is used for access to the campus premises during the evening and weekends and serves as a means to use the printing system on campus.
International programme students arriving to Campus Luleå will receive allocated slots for the LTU Card during the arrival and orientation week – more information will be provided via email in early August. After the arrival and orientation week, you can simply come to Service Point during its opening hours to get the card.
The LTU card is voluntary but makes your life as a student easier. You can get a card after you have started studying, so you do not have to get the card on the same day you start studying.
During the arrival week, you will sort out living accommodations, course registration and meet ESN Luleå. After that, there will be an Orientation Period so you can meet other students, learn about the student administrative process at LTU and explore the city. Details regarding the exact dates and activities will be made available upon arrival.
Arrival and Orientation activities are organised by different groups depending on Campus. For Campus Luleå, your arrival and orientation are exclusively handled by ESN Luleå. For all other campuses, the local Student Union groups and the responsible Departments take a more active role in your orientation.
Arrival Week for Campus Luleå: 19th to 23rd of August 2024 (orientation activities start on the 24th of August).
For all other Campuses, we recommend that you arrive by the 25th of August 2024 to settle in and prepare for your upcoming studies. Your courses will officially start on the 2nd of September, but orientation activities are often arranged a week prior.
All incoming international programme students and Erasmus Mundus students will receive information on when the Academic Workshops are provided. Academic Workshop is always given via Zoom where International Office shows all students how to register for courses, exams etc. It is mandatory that you attend one such workshop (email with Zoom links will be sent out in early August).
Many programmes at LTU provide an opportunity for students who study in English to take S0046P Swedish for Beginners course (3 ECTS). This opportunity is only open to students of non-Scandinavian background. Students enrolled into distance programmes can take the course only if they are willing and capable of coming to one of our Campuses during the beginning of the semester to take the course and sit the exam.
All students taking a programme that includes an elective S0046P will receive an email with a sign up opportunity during the summer months. The email will specify the last possible day for sign up.
If you are a fee-paying student who is eligible to take S0046P, this course is provided free of charge for you.
For students studying in a two year programme at LTU, we recommend that you sign up for the free communal Swedish (SFI) classes to deepen your knowledge of the language even further.
