“I would like to continue inspiring others to realise their dreams.”
Elizabeth Muriu comes from Nairobi in Kenya. She’s a former student at the Master Programme in International Business.
Why did you choose the programme?
“I worked as a Finance and Administration Manager for ten years with an NGO and I have a strong background in international financial and management work experience. I am also an entrepreneur. I wanted to expand my business and explore the market in Europe. I wanted to go abroad and specialise in international business. Since Sweden and Kenya have good relations, Sweden seemed to be a suitable choice.”
What do you think about the programme?
“It has been what I envisioned. The courses are very applicable. It is perfect for anyone who is interested in broadening their knowledge in international business. We don’t just concentrate on the academic theories, but there are opportunities to apply them in practice. A good example is our class had the opportunity to meet the club manager for Luleå Basket and offered them business advice. The studies are not only about theoretical skills. It is also about growth and development at a professional and personal level. We practiced and were able to create our CVs, how to interact with our classmates and encourage them in their endeavours. I have developed my leadership skills through the practical work. I also think that the teachers/lecturers are really good at giving you critical evaluation in a way that helps you to grow. They are quite dedicated and keen to deliver the course contents.”
What was the best thing about being a student at Luleå University of Technology?
“You get to meet and interact, not only with the Swedish students, but others from around the world. The ability to learn and understand other cultures is very rewarding. The LURC - Luleå University Reception Committee, has been very helpful in enabling us to integrate as international students. The committee organises social events and during the orientation period a tour of the Luleå city. There is a gym on campus open to students. Through LTU Business, you as a student can be assisted to develop your business ideas and may receive funding for a startup.”
What is the best thing about Luleå?
“It is very quiet and serene, especially compared to my hometown, Nairobi. You have beautiful nature close by where one can roam freely. I have a perfect view of the forest just outside my window where I live. I have met very friendly people here who have enabled me blend well into the new culture.”
What do you do in your spare time?
“I like the outdoors a lot. I go hiking or ride my bicycle to explore new trails. I also hang out with my friends during the weekends. I like reading books, especially inspirational ones. At the moment I am reading ´Becoming´ by Michelle Obama.”
What do you want to do in the future?
“I would like to expand my business, perhaps import Kenyan goods to Sweden and try to attract more Swedish tourists to visit Kenya. I would also like to work as a business consultant, being a mediator in forming strategic alliances and giving marketing advice. I have worked quite a lot with charitable organisations in Kenya. I would like to contribute to their work with my new skills by engaging in community development to improve their organisational management and financial sustainability. In addition, I would like to continue inspiring others to realise their dreams. This is my way of giving back to the society and showing gratitude to my country. The academic world is also interesting, thus perhaps I’ll apply for doctoral studies in the future.”
Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking about applying for the Master Programme in International Business at Luleå University of Technology?
“Don’t forget to apply early. It gives one ample time to plan for acquiring the resident permit, accommodation and other practical matters. Consult The International Office at Luleå University of Technology for information about being a student in Luleå. If you, like me, are wondering about going back to school after such a long time, don’t be afraid. You will be perfectly fine. It’s worth it in the long run! Make sure to interact with your fellow students and integrate in Sweden; networking is very important. I am sure you will have a really good time here.”
