Graduate school
SUN's graduate school aims to create a creative interdisciplinary environment where doctoral students from several disciplines conduct research on the theme Natural resources for a sustainable societal transformation with a focus on ore, wood and water.
Within the framework of the graduate school, courses and other activities are offered with the aim of creating conditions for the doctoral students to develop a joint knowledge building.
Northern Sweden has the potential to lead the way in the transition of basic industry. The area's natural resources such as ore, forest and water and important basic industry can contribute to the climate transition. Northern Sweden is also home to the Sami, a recognized indigenous people, with a thriving reindeer industry and unique natural values. Many local communities are in great need of jobs and income, and there is a growing tourism sector. Here, many conflicts of objectives and sustainability challenges associated with natural resource extraction and the industrial transition are brought to a head.
Luleå University of Technology is now starting a graduate school within the framework of the university's SUN initiative, Natural Resources for Sustainable Societal Transformation. The research school offers doctoral students the opportunity to contribute to the industrial - and social - transition that must take place to counteract climate change and achieve the UN's global sustainability goals.
"Our doctoral students in the graduate school will have the opportunity to contribute to the industrial - and social - transformation that needs to take place to counteract climate change and achieve the UN's sustainability goals."
Innovative solutions for the basic industry in interaction with the surrounding society
As a doctoral student, you will have the chance to work with leading researchers to develop innovative solutions for a transition of the basic industry. You will also have the opportunity to explore how industry and society can interact to achieve the UN's sustainability goals.
The graduate school consists of an interdisciplinary group of doctoral students from technical/natural sciences, social sciences and humanities.
Close collaborations
The Graduate School offers contact and collaboration with companies, decision-makers, authorities and other actors and interest organizations that are at the heart of the industrial transition in northern Sweden. All research projects conducted within the graduate school are highly relevant to the challenges facing the basic industry and society in Sweden and the rest of the world.
