Data storage
As a student at LTU you will need to store files and data in different situations, on this page you can read about the different storage possibilities and what you should consider when using them.
Home directory
As a student, you have access to 1 GB of storage on LTU's own servers. The storage is available from all computer labs on campus, and if you have configured LTU's VPN on your personal computer, you can access it from home as well. Storing your data here is suitable if it doesn't involve excessively large files, and if you frequently work with the files in one of our computer labs.
Connect to your home directory from your own computer
If you need to learn how to configure VPN you can find instructions for VPN here.
Windows
- Open File Explorer
- Enter \\ltuad.ltu.se\students\<first letter of your username>\<second letter of your username>\<username> in the address field, press Enter/Return
For example, if your username is abcdef-0, the address is: \\ltuad.ltu.se\students\a\b\abcdef-0 - Enter LTUAD\ <username> and LTU - password in the pop-up box that appears.
Mac
- Open Finder and click Go in the menu.
- Click Connect to Server
- Fill in the following: smb://ltuad.ltu.se/Students/ < first letter of username >/ <second letter of username> / <username>
e.g. if your username is abcdef-0, you write: smb://ltuad.ltu.se/students/a/b/abcdef-0 - Enter < username > and LTU password
- Click Connect
OneDrive
All students receive 1 TB of storage in OneDrive, a Microsoft cloud storage service. It is accessible from any device, either through a website or through software you install on your computer or phone. This allows you to store slightly larger amounts of data, or if you need to easily share your data with someone else.
Course disk
In some courses, the instructor provides a course disk on LTU's network storage for work done in the course. In certain instances, everyone enrolled in the course has access to everything stored on the course disk, while in other cases, each individual or group has their own folder as long as they have access. Similar to the home directory, the course disk can be accessed if you have configured VPN on your personal computer.
Windows
- Open File Explorer
- Write \\fscommon.ltuad.ltu.se\courses in the adress field
- Type in LTUAD\<username> and LTU-password when pop-up is displayed
- Choose the department your course belongs to and then go into the folder with your course code
Mac
- Open Finder and choose Go in the menu
- Click on Connect to Server
- Type in: smb://fscommon.ltuad.ltu.se/courses
- Type <username> and LTU password
- Choose the department your course belongs to and then go into the folder with your course code
The cloud computing rooms
The cloud computer labs have their own cloud storage, Common (G:) configured. Anyone who creates a folder here automatically gets access to it, and can then share the folder with other users if necessary. Suitable for project work in the cloud computer lab environment where you need fast access to the files. Files stored here can only be accessed from the cloud computer labs.
You can read more about storage in computer labs here.
Canvas
Storing files in Canvas is very limited and should only be used for text documents during the course. After the course ends, the documents should be moved to other storage.
