
Years 1990-1999
Luleå University changes its name to Luleå University of Technology. A name change that confirms the University status Luleå University has had since its inception in 1971. It is properly celebrated during the 90s both the 20th and 25th anniversary. New education programmes, the School of Theatre, a new university library and Aula Aurora are inaugurated, the University of Culture starts, the first female professor, Ulla Westermark, and a new Vice-Chancellor, Ingegerd Palmér, are installed and much more.
1999
- Aula Aurora, the University's new concert hall, is inaugurated in February.
- The University Library wins the Swedish Library Association's (SBS) competition for the best library website of 1999.
- The School of Nursing in Boden changes principal and becomes part of the University as the 15th department on October 1, 1999. The new name is the Department of Health Science.
- The University passes 10,000 students with the takeover of the School of Health Science.
1998
- The BEd programme for Upper Secondary School teachers begins
- The University receives a government grant of SEK 30 million to establish Luleå Growth Academy
- Ulla Westermark, Professor of Wood material science, becomes the University’s first female professor
- ‘The House of the Pedagogues’ is inaugurated
- The Growth Academy at the University is established
- Two honorary doctors of philosophy are appointed for the first time at Luleå University of Technology, Author Folke Isaksson and Professor John E Tilton.
- The three Honorary doctors of technology are Senior Vice President Vinton G Cerf, Director Christer Löfgren and CEO Ivar Sundström.
1997
- As of January 1, 1997, the name is Luleå University of Technology, a name change that confirms the university status Luleå University has had for many years.
- The Faculty of philosophy is formed. Professor Gunnar Persson is elected Dean.
- A new MSc programme in Space Science begins.
- A BSc programme in Hydropower Engineering begins in Jokkmokk.
- "The Lulea Algorithm" is presented by four researchers from Luleå University of Technology (Svante Carlsson, Andrej Brodnik, Mikael Degermark and Stephen Pink). An invention that attracts great attention throughout the global Internet industry.
1996
- Luleå University of Technology celebrates its 25th anniversary.
- The School of Theatre in Norra hamn in Luleå is inaugurated and starts with 8 students out of 500 applicants.
- Sweden's first professorship in Geographical information technology is established, as well as professorships in Computer communication, Chemical device technology, Wood materials technology, Wood physics and Industrial design.
- On the occasion of the 25th anniversary, six Honorary doctors of technology are appointed. Former Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson, Professor Evelyn Fox Keller, CEO Sture Johansson, Director Carl Kempe, and CEO Samme Lindmark.
1995
- The University of Culture is established with popular science lectures for the public.
- Nutek's first competence centre Polhem Laboratory, for integrated product manufacturing, is inaugurated at Luleå University of Technology.
- The Graduate School for Women is established.
- Computer Science for women is offered for the first time as an attempt to attract more women to the field.
- The Spatial Modelling Centre is established.
- The School of Music in Piteå expands.
- A degree programme in International Business Administration and Economics begins.
- A new diploma course in media pedagogy begins in Piteå.
- Luleå University of Technology wins the Innovation Cup again.
1994
- Ingegerd Palmér is installed as the new Vice-Chancellor. The first female Vice-Chancellor at a university of technology.
- The University's new library is inaugurated.
- A new business concept with long-term goals has been developed.
- A new teacher’s training program for Compulsory School Forms 4–9 begins.
- Mimer University's second competence centre is inaugurated (recycling of metals and minerals).
- CDT (Centre for Distance-Spanning Technology) starts as a collaborative project in which the University is a partner.
- Sweden's largest student computer network is inaugurated at the University.
- In 1994 the following Honorary doctors of technology are appointed: Director Birgit Erngren, Professor Michel Lucius and Director Arne Wittlöf.
1993
- The University's Medal of Service is awarded for the first time. The recipient is Caesar Wiberg, former Director.
- The study programmes are superseded by new programmes that offer students more freedom to choose their courses
- The International MSc programme in Materials Science and Engineering begins for the first time
- The University establishes Sweden’s first professorship in Gender and Technology
- The School of Music scores a big hit with their "Sgt. Pepper Live" concert
- Summer University courses are offered for the first time
- New Honorary doctors of technology in 1993 are Director Per-Olof Eriksson, organ builder Anders Grönlund and Professor Bengt Hultqvist.
- The student union building in Skellefteå is inaugurated. It also houses a library and restaurant.
1992
- New MSc engineering programmes begin in Chemical Engineering and Engineering Physics
- An education programme in pedagogics, teaching methods and teaching practice for teachers of Forms 4 to 9 of Compulsory School begins
- A Social Sciences programme begins with specialisation in either economics or political science
- The Alpha Building is completed
- Wibergsgården is inaugurated, donated to the University by Caesar Wiberg.
1991
- The University celebrates its 20th anniversary
- Two new MSc engineering programmes begin: Electrical Power Engineering in Skellefteå and Chemical Engineering in Luleå
- The University council approve the University’s first mission statement in the form of a strategic document
- Nils-Erik Molin is elected Deputy vice-chancellor of the University
- Eleven more professorships are established
- When Luleå University of Technology celebrates its 20th anniversary, five Honorary doctors of technology are appointed in 1991. Education consultant Bengt Andersson, Director of Teknikens Hus Ann-Marie Israelsson, Director Martin Lundberg, Professor Markku Mannerkoski, and Director Björn Wahlström.
1990
- Three new BSc engineering programmes are established: Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering in Kiruna, Mechanical Engineering in Luleå, and Structural Engineering in Skellefteå.
- The Institute for Computer Integrated Manufacturing is inaugurated.
- Two engineering students from the University, Stefan Björnfot and Mats Granqvist, win the national final of the Innovation Cup.
- The prestigious Swedish Construction and Design Exhibition’s “Designer’s Prize” is awarded to Kalevi Hyyppä, a researcher at the University.
- Lennart Elfgren is appointed Dean.
