- A model with measures to get students to stay on their programmes is implemented during the year and quickly gives positive results.
- A Career Centre is inaugurated at Luleå University of Technology with the aim of increasing students' working life connection and facilitating entry into the labour market.
- A new research centre, the Centre for High Performance Steel, starts its operations and the purpose is to create new niche products based on high performance steel.
- Professor Harald Vogel is appointed Honorary doctor of philosophy.

2007
- LTU Innovation is established to support the commercialisation of ideas from the University.
- Teacher training programs celebrate 100 years.
- Bologna adaptation continues and all programmes have partially revised courses
- The number of programmes increases due to Bologna alignment, Master's programmes become Bachelor's and Master's programs.
- A new research and education strategy for 2009–2012 is prepared.
- Management decides on a new strategic map for research and education.
- External funding continues to increase.
- The total number of students continues to decline, with negative consequences for the finances.
- Archival counsellour Börje Justrell is appointed Honorary doctor of philosophy.
- Director Lars-Eric Aaro and Dr. Albert Ruelhi are appointed Honorary doctors of technology.

2006
- The Master programme in Fire Protection Engineer starts and becomes a huge success with a high number of applications
- The Bologna adaptation of undergraduate education takes off and a new education and degree structure is introduced.
- Centres of Faste Laboratory and Lean Wood Engineering started its activities with funding from Vinnova
- The number admitted to the PhD programme will greatly increase, as well as the number of doctoral students
- The number of students continues to decline and new registrations fall by 10 percent.
- Director Kjell Sundvall is appointed Honorary doctor of philosophy.
- Professor Jiri Marsalek and Senior Vice President Planos Plegas are awarded Honorary doctorates in technology.
2005
- The University Board decides to move the Department of Health Science to Luleå.
- The increase in first choice applications continues. Engineering programmes increase by 40 percent compared to 2004.
- The Master’s programme in Architecture is established.
- The University’s research in tribology, mining engineering/metallurgy and distributed engineering and other areas is among the most prominent in the world.
- New research projects during the year include research on future digital archive systems and in the field of security analysis.
- Work begins on developing a new strategy for the University 2006–2011.
- Vice-Chancellor Ingegerd Palmér leaves and is succeeded in November by Pia Sandvik Wiklund.
- The educational program Civil Engineering in ergonomic design & production is selected as "Technology education of the year" by the Swedish Technology Companies association and receives a price of MSEK 1.5.
- Professor Elinor Ostrom is appointed Honorary doctor of philosophy.
- Professor Anna Sierpinska is appointed Honorary doctor of technology.
2004
- Focus on student recruitment and marketing due to the large decrease in the number of students admitted in 2003. The work includes strengthening the university's brand
- The number of first choice applications turns around and becomes the highest in the university's history.
- The Mining and Rock Engineering Research Center, HLRC, and the Rock Materials Research Center are established.

- Former governor Kari Marklund and opera singer Birgitta Svendén are appointed honorary doctors of philosophy.

- A major change process to form a new departmental and administrative organisation at the University begins.
- The NITS project starts to develop an IT strategy and a new University-wide IT organisation.
- Sharp decline in the number of applicants to the University.
- Arena Networks changes its name to Arena Management & Technology in Networks.
- Professor Hans Leygraf is appointed Honorary doctor of philosophy.
- CEO Leif Östling is appointed Honorary doctor of technology.

2002
- Four new media courses and a course in dispensing pharmacy are introduced.
- Arena Networks, Arena Innovative Engineering and Business, Arena Global Resources and Arena Lifestyle, Health & Technology are established.
- Unitas and Pedagogkåren are merged into Luleå Student Union.
- Luleå University of Technology becomes the first university in Sweden to be connected to the new nationwide high-speed network Gigasunet.
- Actor Staffan Westerberg is appointed Honorary doctor of philosophy.

- Centre for information technology in the construction sector, e-bygg, is established.

- Start of MRC (Mäkitalo Research Centre), a new international research centre with the task of developing the distance-bridging mobile services.
- Three students from Luleå University of Technology climbs Mont Blanc, 4807 meters high, th University's flag was with them at the top.
- The University Board gives the go-ahead for the University 2006.
- The King of Sweden opens the multimedia studio for distributed engineering, the only one of its kind in existence, on December 6.
- Funding for the Faculty of Philosophy increases in the budget bill from 11 to 23 million within a three-year period.
- Composer Bo Nilsson is appointed Honorary doctor of philosophy.
- CEO Thomas Nilsson and Director Jan Martinsson are appointed Honorary doctors of technology.
