How to apply for composition
Your application to composition is made in four steps.
How to apply to composition - Luleå University of Technology
1. Apply at universityadmissions.se
The deadline for application is 15 January, 2025.
2. Send portfolio with works
A portfolio containing work samples and a personal letter must be submitted no later than March 2, 2025. Send this portfolio to antagningsprovkomp@ltu.se.
The portfolio should consist of up to five notated works that showcase the applicant's profile and range. These work samples should be original compositions and include:
- Score in PDF format
- Audio file in MP3 format (recordings with live musicians or exported audio files from, e.g., a notation program).
If a work is of an audiovisual nature, the visual element should also be included using a suitable method (e.g., a link to a YouTube video).
In addition to notated work samples, applicants are encouraged to include other types of work, such as electronic music, sound art, film, or game music. However, the focus should remain on the notated work samples.
3. Take the Admission Test
The admission test consists of two parts: a general music theory test and a specific test for the composition profile.
Music Theory Test (MT)
The theory test will be available on Monday, March 18, and Tuesday, March 19, between 10:00–12:00. You can choose either of these times (you only take the test once).
The test is conducted online. Applicants will receive an email at least two weeks before the test date with an invitation to a digital room on the Canvas learning platform, where the test can be accessed.
The test assesses skills in ear training and music theory. No tools are required for the test, but it should be done in a quiet environment where you can focus and listen to audio files without being disturbed.
The test is written in English as the program is open to international applicants.
Composition Test
The composition test will be available from Monday, March 18, at 13:00. Submission of the test will be open until Tuesday, March 19, at 18:00.
The test is conducted online. Applicants will receive an email at least two weeks before the test date with an invitation to a digital room on the learning platform Canvas, where the composition test can be accessed.
The composition test consists of tasks that assess the applicant's creativity, musical general knowledge, score listening skills, instrument knowledge, and orchestration skills.
The test requires applicants to write musical notation. It is recommended that applicants have a notation program installed on their computer before starting the test. The test should also be completed in an environment where you can work undisturbed and listen to audio files.
The test is written in English as the program is open to international applicants.
4. Interview
The interview will be conducted via Zoom on Thursday, March 20, between 09:00–18:00. An exact schedule will be sent out after the work samples have been reviewed and assessed. The interview takes approximately 15 minutes per applicant.
