Elin and Elin builds a LEGO house
In an advanced simulation involving planning for construction, students from the civil engineering programs in architecture and civil engineering had to sweat under stress as main contractors and subcontractors to build a house in Lego.
"This exercise provides understanding and insights into the importance of planning and communication," says Alexandra Renberg who represented Byggnads, the Swedish Building Workers' Union, during this learning session.
The simulation was divided into two sessions with limited time where the first was carried out with black and white drawings and some improvised planning. In the second session, the students got better drawings in color and an opportunity to plan the work while cutting the time for the project in half.
"With different key figures, we measure, for example, the number of visits to the workplace by the various subcontractors, accidents such as forgetting to put on the helmet in the construction zone. We also look at costs, waste of materials and so on," says Jarkko Erikshammar, Adjunct University Lecturer in Construction Management and Building Technology at Luleå University of Technology.
The main contractors on behalf of a client to produce the house were the students Elin Bigseth and Elin Svärd. They were tasked with making sure that the various subcontractors placed their Lego pieces correctly according to the drawing.
"The coloring of the buildning was ok, but one window ended up in the wrong place, says Elin Bigseth after the first session.
This simulation/exercise has also been carried out in collaboration with business.
This simulation is given in the construction control and management course at Luleå University of Technology. Prerequisites are a basic understanding of the construction process and the role of production in the construction process as well as planning and management of construction projects.
