Additive manufactured products - towards a digital twin
In this project, the goal is to develop a digital twin for additive manufacturing. The digital twin is a virtual representation of the additive manufacturing process and can be used to ensure the quality of additive manufactured products.
Additive manufacturing is a transformative approach to manufacturing that opens for a resource-effective and circular usage of material when manufacturing products which are one of the goals to achieve a sustainable society. With this manufacturing method, the right amount of material can be added when manufacturing products and a near-net-shape process ensures that a minimum, if any, of the material must be machined away. This leads to a more resource-effective approach to manufacturing.
With the ongoing digitalization, new opportunities are created for simulation of additive manufacturing where computer tools can be used to ensure the quality of the manufactured products ahead of manufacturing. This is also known as a digital twin where you couple reality to a virtual model. Important process parameters can be determined before manufacturing with digital twins and thus you can get the product “right the first time” in the manufacturing stage. This reduces the risk of products going to waste and costly, material demanding physical tests can be avoided. Hence, digital twins can be used to further increase the resource effectiveness of additive manufacturing. In this project, the focus will be on creating a digital twin for additive manufacturing.
Unwanted distortions, risk of brittle or ductile failure are some of the quality factors of additively manufactured products that can be evaluated with a digital twin.
