Entry requirements: The course is open for students admitted to third-cycle studies at LTU.

Course content:
The course focuses on the different phases and functions of the publishing process based on their research approaches, perspectives and traditions. The aim is to create a platform for the understanding of and discussions on how knowledge is produced, transferred and evaluated within and outside of the scientific community. In connection to the lectures, workshops are held, which requires active participation by the course participants. The workshops include practical exercises intended to provide tools to manage as well as to strategically plan, initiate and implement the publishing process.

Learning outcomes:

After completed course the PhD student should:

• understand and have practical knowledge of the different phases and functions of the publishing process
• understand the role of academic publishing to knowledge production and transfer
• have knowledge of and insight into different publishing traditions and models
• have knowledge of and have practical skills in reviewing articles
• have knowledge and be able to apply a critical perspective on a) bibliometrics as a measure of evaluation of research b) women’s and men’s conditions for academic publishing

The above learning outcomes implies that this course targets the following national criteria for a doctoral degree, as numbered in the Appendix B to the individual study plan: 2.3; 3.2

Course methods:
The course leaders, and guest lecturers lecture on the different phases and functions of the publishing process based on their research approaches, perspectives and traditions. The aim is to create a platform for the understanding of and discussions on how knowledge is produced, transferred and evaluated within and outside of the scientific community. In connection to the lectures, workshops are held, which requires active participation by the course participants. The workshops include practical exercises intended to provide tools to manage as well as to strategically plan, initiate and implement the publishing process. The course is performed through lectures, and work-shops, six half-days, in the form of "lunch-to-lunch" when possible.

Examination form:
The course is examined based on verbal and written assignments, including active participation in class. This requires attendance and active participation in class, where active attendance five out of six sessions are mandatory, of which the first and the last sessions are mandatory. If absent at the last session, the course participant needs to attend this session the coming year when the course is given. The course is given on campus (not online), and thus course participants need to participate on campus.
