KURSPLAN, kurs på forskarutbildningsnivå
Course name: Gender and equality
ECTS/hp: 2.0 hp
Course code: FOR050F
Educational level: Third cycle
Entry requirements: The course is open for students admitted to third-cycle studies at LTU.
Course content:
The course provides a basic introduction to the research and scientific discussion that problematizes the implementation and content of scientific research from a gender and/or gender equality perspective. In focus are issues related to representation and conditions in academic work organizations; and norms and perceptions in the outcomes of scientific production. The course also provides a basic understanding of gender mainstreaming as a strategy for universities and university colleges, as well as of the problems and opportunities that this strategy may entail. During the course, the doctoral students will also, through qualified analysis exercises in workshops, apply a gender and gender equality perspective on their own area of research.
Learning outcomes:
After completing the course, the student shall
- be able to account for basic features in the scientific discussion that problematize scientific research from a gender and/or gender equality perspective
- demonstrate the ability to reflect on gender mainstreaming as a strategy within universities and university colleges
- be able to analyse their own research and their own research area from a gender perspective
The above learning outcomes implies that this course targets the following national criterium for a doctoral degree, as numbered in the Appendix B to the individual study plan: 3.2
Course methods:
The teaching is conducted in the form of lectures, as well as compulsory literature seminars and workshops where active participation is a requirement. The lectures provide an introduction to central themes for the course; to a gender and gender equality perspective on scientific research and gender mainstreaming as a strategy for changing universities and university colleges. The literature seminars focus scientific texts that both introduce and problematize a gender and gender equality perspective in relation to scientific research, and provide examples of the type of knowledge that the application of such perspectives can provide in practice. During workshops, the research students practice applying a gender perspective to analyse and reflect on the course literature and on their own research area, which in turn forms the basis for writing an individual report at the end of the course. The course is completed in whole or in part with the help of distance-bridging technology.
Examination form:
The course is examined through active participation in literature seminars and workshops as well as the writing of an individual report where the students with the support of the course literature summarize and reflect on the course content in relation to their own research area.
