COURSE SYLLABUS
Course name: Reach out with your message—Oral communication for a broader audience
ECTS/HP: 2,0 ECTS
Course code: FOR057F
Educational level: Third-cycle course
Entry requirements: The course is open for students admitted to third-cycle studies at LTU.
Course content:
The course provides a basic understanding of how and what we convey with the body and how we best use the room to reach out and create listening. More specifically, the course provides a basic introduction to how we best use our own instrument in communication with others, both in the physical space and in audiovisual media. The course provides basic knowledge of the voice as an instrument and basic text interpretation. During the course, participants can practice and develop their communicative skills through workshops. The skills that the course develops can, for example, be used in teaching contexts and oral communication with the scientific community and the broader society.
Learning outcomes:
After completing the course, participants will:
- Understand their own instrument
- Be able to use their own instrument in communication with an audience
- Be able to use the knowledge of their own instrument when communicating in digital media
The above learning outcomes implies that this course targets the following national criteria for a doctoral degree, as numbered in Appendix B to the individual study plan: 2.4
Course methods:
The course is led by teachers with expertise in performing arts. Teaching is conducted through workshops and lectures over a total of three full days. Attendance and active participation at all teaching sessions is a requirement. Participants contribute to a certain extent with their own material and writing assignments occur between workshops and lectures. All teaching sessions are held on site at the Teaterhögskolans premises in Luleå. The course is given in English. If all participants are Swedish-speaking, the course is given in Swedish.
Examination form:
The course is examined through active participation in workshops and lectures as well as through a written reflection where the participants, supported by the practical teaching, summarize and reflect on the content of the course in relation to their own instrument. As active participation in workshops and lectures forms part of the examination, attendance and active participation is required at all course sessions. The participants are examined through four individual written assignments and mandatory seminars.
