Lesson design with SKUA and KL for increased student agency
The aim of the project is to develop a lesson design with language development and cooperative elements that enable student agency.
Who are we?
The project involves first teachers Lena Sandling, Ann-Louise Strömbäck and Eva-Maria Wargh from Prästholmsskolan in Boden and Stefan Lundström and Elin Ruth from Luleå University of Technology. Prästholmsskolan is an F-6 school with a relatively large number of students with Swedish as a second language.
The area of R&D practice-based research
The project's teachers have been working for a long time to create engagement among students through cooperative learning (CL). At the same time, language and knowledge development approaches (SKUA) offer many methods for collaboration between students. Through ULF collaboration, both teachers and researchers hope to be able to systematize the planning and implementation of teaching and to take advantage of experiences to build the activity on a scientific basis.
Purpose of the project
The aim of the project is to develop a lesson design with language development and cooperative elements that enable student agency.
- Research question: In what way does a lesson design based on SKUA and KL stimulate student agency, with a particular focus on boys and students with Swedish as a second language?
Implementation and documentation
During the fall of 2023, a number of teaching tools for cooperative work will be tested. Among these are already established tools for SKUA, such as the EPA model (alone-pair-all) and question-answer. Different periods during the semester focus on different tools, which are tested in several classes and in different subjects. This creates a basis for evaluating and comparing them. The teachers document their experiences in logbooks and the researchers conduct classroom observations. These materials then form the basis for workshops that teachers and researchers conduct together to find out how the lesson design contributes to student agency. The first phase of the project focuses on teachers' experiences. In the future, the intention is to investigate how students perceive the design.
Dissemination of results
To enable more teachers to test the lesson design, the results will initially be disseminated locally at the school at team meetings and joint conferences. Later, the results will be disseminated to other primary schools in the municipality of Boden. The results are also presented as practical elements in the primary school teacher training at LTU and through lectures in various contexts, such as UDiN. Through various teacher forums on social media, we reach teachers locally and in other parts of Sweden. The result is also planned to be shared at a national first teacher conference.
