Our honorary doctors

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Faculty of Science and Technology at Luleå University of Technology appoint honorary doctors every year. It is a dignity that the faculties bestow upon individuals whom they wish to particularly honor and connect with the research community.

According to tradition, it is usually individuals who have not chosen the academic path but have otherwise contributed to research and earned the dignity associated with a doctoral title. This is part of the university's commitment to openness and connections beyond the traditional research community. An academician who has significantly contributed to research or education within the faculty can also be appointed as an honorary doctor.

Luleå University of Technology has been appointing honorary doctors since 1981. The honorary doctors are conferred during the Academic Ceremony held in November each year.

2025

Luleå University of Technology has appointed three honorary doctors for 2025: Lennart Rohdin, Petra Viklund, and Joachim Nordin. They will give their honorary doctoral lecture on Friday 7 November and will be awarded their doctorates at the University's Academic Ceremony on Saturday 8 November.

Lennart Rohdin, Honorary Doctor of Philosophy

Lennart Rohdin, former government special inquiry chair on rights of national minorities and minority languages in Sweden, has been appointed Honorary Doctor of Philosophy at Luleå University of Technology.

The work of Lennart Rohdin has significantly influenced how authorities and civil society organisations today address minority issues. His efforts are characterised by a deep respect for historical and cultural contexts. Lennart Rohdin's long-term commitment has had a major impact not only on society at large but also on the university’s research, education, and societal engagement concerning minority languages and minorities.

Joachim Nordin, Honorary Doctor of Technology

Joachim Nordin, CEO of Skellefteå Kraft Group, has been appointed Honorary Doctor of Technology at Luleå University of Technology.

Joachim Nordin has been steering the company’s transformation towards a sustainable society. Over the years, Joachim Nordin and Skellefteå Kraft have maintained strong ties with Luleå University of Technology, supporting both cutting-edge research and education. Skellefteå Kraft has contributed to the university's electrical power engineering programme since its inception in 2011.

Petra Viklund, Honorary Doctor of Technology

Petra Viklund, Head of Water and Sewage at Luleå Miljöresurs (Lumire) since 2016, has been appointed Honorary Doctor of Technology at Luleå University of Technology.

Petra Viklund has a genuine interest in research that has helped develop and deepen the collaboration between Lumire and Luleå University of Technology. With her knowledge base and enthusiasm, she is passionate about progress and cooperation. Petra Viklund is demonstrating great commitment to both research and education.
