
Academic ceremony 2023
During a festive ceremony, doctors and honorary doctors received their hats, professors were inaugurated and adjunct professors were awarded diplomas. This was followed by a banquet with a three-course dinner.
"It is my pleasure to welcome you to Luleå University of Technology’s Academic Ceremony 2023. A ceremony that highlights and pays tribute to individual achievement, as well as reminds us that we belong to the historical and international collective that academia represents", said Vice-Chancellor Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn in her opening speech.
Solemn ceremony
The honorary doctorates Staffan Göthe, Peter Englund, Alice Kempe and Jan Moström received their hats, as well as seven doctors of philosophy and 29 doctors of technology. Four new professors were installed and three new adjunct professors were welcomed during the ceremony in Kulturens hus.
"Research helps us understand ourselves, the world around us and the universe of which we are part, while at the same time creating innovations that improve the world in the short and long term", said Vice-Chancellor Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of academic awards. Nordea's scientific prize was awarded to Professor Staffan Lundström, Vattenfall's prize for the best doctoral thesis to University Lecturer Carola Strandberg, Teknologkårens supervisor prize to Professor Ramin Karim, and the Vice-Chancellor's Medal of Merit was presented to Senior Professor Lennart Elfgren.
The guests also got to listen to RSPO Orchestra Academy and the Chamber Choir from the School of Music at Luleå University of Technology.
Festive banquet
Close to 350 people attended the subsequent banquet on the university campus. There were, among other things, speeches by Vice-Chancellor Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn, the new Doctor Albin Dahlin Almevall, the new Professor Dina Shona Laila, Honorary Doctor Staffan Göthe and Deputy Governor Katarina Ljunggren. The dinner entertainment was provided by former Idol winner Nadja Kasanesh together with Ulf Friberg from the Theatre Academy at Luleå University of Technology and the men's choir Snapsakademien.
The evening menu was the official province menu of Norrbotten, created by chef Simon Laiti from Hemmagastronomi. The first course consisted of smoked reindeer roast, reindeer pancake, reindeer flake,
sour cream, apples and lingonberries. For the main course, Arctic char, beurre blanc with Kalix vendace roe, almond potato puree and vegetables in season was served. For dessert the guests received almond cake, crème fraiche sorbet and Arctic Raspberry compote. The evening concluded with music by STHLM JukeBox and a DJ.
