Characterisation of AM components using ultrasound (QCAM)
The goal of the project is to develop methods for non-destructive evaluation of the AM material properties, based on ultrasound measurement.
The use of ultrasound has the potential to become the material characterization method used for AM since it is quick, safe, scales well with component size. Since ultrasound is a mechanical wave, it is also directly sensitive to changes in mechanical properties.
This project focuses on designing quantitative techniques for estimating local material properties based on ultrasonic measurements, microstructure level and up to the detection of conventional defects like inclusions, cracks, pores, etc. This will reduce the need for some of the expensive and time-consuming destructive techniques used today.
