Sustainable and Circular Nuclear Energy through Advanced Materials and Tribology Research (CiNEMaT)
Characterisation, advanced manufacturing and tribological testing of materials to support design of a Swedish GenIV lead-cooled research reactor. The research project is an integrated part of the SUNRISE research centre.
Circular use of hazardous materials is an appealing concept to improve resource efficiency as well as minimise cost and issues related to waste treatment. In applications such as nuclear power generation, this is especially prominent since handling and storage of used nuclear fuel pose a significant challenge. To realize a Swedish GenIV lead-cooled reactor, a number of technical and scientific challenges have to be resolved. Three Swedish universities (KTH, LTU, UU) are working on design, safety analysis, development of recyclable fuel, and optimization of components and materials.
The CiNEMaT project aims to develop new materials and processing methods and to understand the mechanisms for erosion/corrosion/fretting degradation of materials in a liquid lead environment. Research results will provide higher reliability and stability of reactor components and optimised reactor performance in terms of component durability. Therefore, we contribute to improved long-term safety and productivity for the next generation of nuclear reactors.
