New Technologies and Changing Working Conditions in Dairy Farms
Attractive Agricultural Work for Increased Food Production
A central actor in increasing Sweden’s self-sufficiency is the dairy-producing farmer, especially in the north of Sweden where there are unfavorable conditions to produce other food. The restructuring and reshaping of the Swedish agricultural sector have led to fewer farmers. However, the number of cows and dairy producers remain about the same. This means the cows now produce more on larger, but fewer farms. Technology has reduced the heavy and manual tasks, which has transformed the work environment, qualifications, and social relations for dairy producing farmers. Based on the interaction between humans, technology, organization, animals, and nature; this study aims to support the attractivity of agricultural work and competence, and by doing so contribute to Sweden’s food supply and self-sufficiency. The objective is to see how new technology has affected the work environment and work conditions for the dairy producing farmers.
