If you want to organize an activity for doctoral students in your department or for doctoral students at Luleå University of Technology, please contact your department representative.
Attend section meetings
Another way to get involved is to attend section meetings. These are usually at the beginning of each semester. If you want to get information about upcoming activities, make sure you are on the PhD mailing list for your department and LTU, as well as a member of the Facebook groups "PhD Students Association at LTU" and "Meet your Peers @ LTU".
Get elected
The PhD Student Association appoints its own representatives to decision-making and preparatory bodies within Luleå University of Technology. In most cases, this is governed by a decision that a certain number of student representatives should be doctoral students.
Description of assignments in the PhD Student Association
The various assignments in the PhD Student Association are described below and the time compensation each assignment constitutes in the form of departmental tasks is presented. Each assignment also includes handing over the assignment to its replacement and familiarizing yourself with the ongoing work of the handover.
§ 1.1 Chairman/representative in The Board of the University
The chairman is the convener of the board of the PhD Student Association. As a representative in US you participate in 5 days (full day)/year. The chairperson participates every month in "kårlunch", prepares meetings and various tasks and meetings. Time compensation is 15% and 5% in the University Board.
§ 1.2 Vice President
The Vice President acts in the place of the President when he/she is not available while ensuring the overall protocol of the Board. They attend monthly board meetings, organize meetings and various tasks and appointments. Time compensation is 10%.
§ 1.3 Secretary
Attend the Doctoral Student Association meeting, section meeting (1/semester) and annual meeting, responsible for the minutes, for them to be signed and uploaded on the Doctoral Student Association website and Box. Updates the website with information. Time compensation is 5 %.
§ 1.4 Faculty Boards ("TFN"/"FFN")
The governance of education and research includes two faculty boards: 1) the Board of the Faculty of Science and Technology ("TFN") for the area of technical education and research, and 2) the Board of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences ("FFN") for the area of education and research in business administration and social sciences, health sciences, arts, education and humanities.
The Faculty Board has overall responsibility for doctoral education in terms of quality, efficiency, organization, curricula and supervision, and for the coordination of courses and training of doctoral supervisors. In addition, the faculty boards have a general supervisory responsibility for doctoral education. The main tasks of the faculty boards are strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation.
The faculty boards shall function as strategy, analysis and evaluation groups for the Vice-Chancellor/University Board and departments in matters relating to undergraduate education, postgraduate education, research focus and quality, external relations and internationalization issues. The Faculty Boards submit proposals to the Vice-Chancellor and the University Board and have decision-making powers according to university policy and by delegation from the Vice-Chancellor.

§ 1.5 Doctoral student representative from TFN and FFN in FoG ("research group")
FoG works with issues related to doctoral education. FoG serves as a steering group for supervisors and doctoral programs and works, for example, with quality assurance aspects.
FoG meets about once a month (2-3 hours) and also meets the director of education for the doctoral program ("ULF") twice a semester. Time compensation is 5 %.
§ 1.6 Representative in the artistic committee for FFN
The artistic steering group for FFN. Time compensation is 5 %.
§ 1.7 Doctoral student representative at the Department of Social Sciences, Technology and the School of Arts steering group ("ETKS")
Meets every two weeks, approx. 2 hours, sometimes extra meetings. Participate in the board meetings of the doctoral students' association.Time compensation is 7%.
§ 1.8 Doctoral student representative in the board of the Department of Health, Education and Technology The university's steering group ("HLT")
Meeting once a month, approx. 4 hours/half day, (sometimes extra meetings). Participate in the board meetings of the doctoral student association. Time compensation is 5 %.
§ 1.9 Doctoral student representative in the executive committee of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering The steering committee of the university ("SBN")
As a doctoral student representative, the board will turn to you for input on issues related to doctoral education, and although many other topics are discussed at the meetings, they will be of personal interest to you and help to increase your understanding of the inner workings of the department.
The assignment is linked to a position as a doctoral student representative in the department's Specialist Group for Doctoral Education. The Executive Committee meets once a month from September to June and the Special Group meets more sporadically a few times a year. Participate in the board meetings of the Doctoral Student Association. Time compensation is 5 %.
§ 1.10 Doctoral student representative at the Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering's Steering Group ("SRT")
As a doctoral student representative at SRT, you participate in SRT's board meetings (1 hour every two weeks) and the doctoral student association's board meetings (2-3 hours once a month). Once every 2 years, you should organize a meeting and social event for all doctoral students at SRT where various topics related to doctoral education, work environment, employment and such are discussed. Other necessary meetings and social events can be organized on your own initiative if needed. Time compensation 5 %.
§1.11 Doctoral student representative at the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics
As a doctoral student representative at TVM, you participate in TVM's board meetings every four weeks (2-4 hours) and the board meeting of the Doctoral Student Association. Twice a year, the doctoral student representative participates in the introduction course for newly admitted doctoral students at the department (about 2 hours) and gives a presentation about the Doctoral Student Association. In addition, one activity per semester is organized for all doctoral students at TVM on their own initiative. Time compensation is 5 %.
§ 1.12 Doctoral student representative in the Seth M Kempe scholarship fund at LTU
The purpose of the foundation is to support scientific teaching and research by providing travel grants to members of Teknologkåren - Student Union for Engineers at LTU who reside in Västernorrland, Västerbotten or Norrbotten. Under doctoral students, doctoral students and PhD students are welcome to apply.
The doctoral representative should be fluent in Swedish as he or she has the main responsibility to assess and evaluate the applications according to well-established assessment criteria.
No time compensation is given to the representative. On average, 2-3 meetings are held annually depending on available finances, number of applications, discussion of investment policy and choice of investment agency for the capital of the foundation.
§ 1.13 Doctoral student representative in SACO-S, Luleå University of Technology
As a doctoral student representative in the local SACO board at LTU, you regularly participate in the work of the SACO board and its weekly board meetings. In SACO-S you represent the doctoral students at LTU. This involves, among other things, handling union matters concerning doctoral students, keeping in touch between SACO and the doctoral student section and participating in the negotiations on the doctoral students' salary scale, which is revised once a year. The assignment also includes participation in the doctoral student section's board meetings and activities. Time compensation is 5 %.
