One of the most modern organs in the world
The University Organ is based on previous results in research and artistic development, but also stakes out new paths for the future. The instrument makes it possible to play both classical and contemporary works as well as music that has not yet been created.
Construction of the organ began in August 2006 by the leading European firm Orgelbauwerkstatt Woehl, Germany, under the direction of Gerald Woehl. Project manager from Luleå University of Technology was Professor Hans-Ola Ericsson.
Organ Acusticum at Luleå University of Technology is 10 meters wide and 9.5 meters high. The organ has 9,000 pipes distributed over 140 voices (plus 13 effect registers). The total number of voices is 206.
The organ can be played from anywhere in the world via the internet and reaches a global audience in cinemas, concert halls or people's homes, both nationally and internationally.
Organ Acusticum at Luleå University of Technology is an instrument that, through the combination of tradition, artistic innovation and innovative technology, constitutes a tool for the music of the future and for research on, for example, interpretation.
During the opening week, Benny Andersson performed for the first time his work En skrift i snön with text by Kristina Lugn. The work is specially composed for the new giant organ at Luleå University of Technology.
