Sustainable Solid-State Lithium-ion Batteries -SSSLiB
The SSSLiB project provide additional avenues for the use of biomass or waste materials in solid-state lithium-ion batteries and create a systematic database to track material and energy flows from biomass/waste feed stocks to battery recycling, developing fully sustainable solid-state batteries Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries.
Developing solid-state lithium-ion batteries with the bio-based and recycled materials green, sustainable and high endurance based on biomass or waste materials is an effective means to improve the sustainability of batteries as well as resource efficiency and eco- and recycle-economies. Nowadays, most biomass residualsand waste materials, such as metal elements (Co, Ni, Mn, etc), cellulose, lignin, SiOx, etc., are incinerated and landfilled. For example, the produced SiOx (eg, 600 Mton-SiO2/year from rice husk) from bioenergy thermal conversion is discharged together with other burnt residuals, entailing additional handling and disposal costs and thus resulting in a waste of resources. Therefore, using bio-based and recycled materials to build the sustainable solid-state lithium-ion batteries from electrodes to electrolytes, is essential.
The research project SSSLiB will develop sustainable high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries from bio-based and recycled materials. The specific objectives are to: (i) develop solid-state Li-ion batteries by applying bio-based/recycled materials and combining with bio-poly(ionic liquid)s to achieve high safety and high energy density, (ii) identify key parameters of bio-materials that affect the performance of batteries, providing suggestions to the conversion/extraction processes to adjust the products, (iii) interact with recovery-process (recycling) to clarify how the used materials influence the recovery and adjust battery and recovery units to improve sustainability, (iiii) create systematic database to track material and energy flows for quantifying the added values based on techno-economic and environmental performances and developing process integration/digitalization models, by combining with other on-going projects.
