School of Music in Piteå at Luleå University of Technology

At the School of Music, musicians and teachers are trained in various genres. Internationally leading research in musical design is conducted here, in collaboration with research centers in Europe and the USA.

At the School of Music, research and education are integrated and carried out in close collaboration with the regional music scene in Norrbotten.

The School of Music in Piteå was founded in 1978 as part of Luleå university of technology. In the same building as the School of Music is also Sweden's leading education in audio engineering, and Studio Acusticum which is one of northern Europe's most modern concert halls.


The School of Music is located on the university campus in Piteå. There is also a business village.

Under the same roof as the music programmes, there are also programmes in journalism and sound technology. Dances courses are also offered  in the same premises. It provides good opportunities for collaborations ,both within the framework of the respective educational program and between the educational subjects, with in and outside of the regular schedule.

On the course sound art and design, students learn to shape and reflect on their visions of sound. The course ends with a sound exhibition at the Academy of Music in Piteå at Luleå University of Technology. One of the exhibitors in 2023 was Lina Dovner.

Erik Weissglas, university lecturer and guitar teacher at The Piteå School of Music at Luleå University of Technology, has been appointed as a jury member in the Albin Hagström memorial fund managed by the Royal Academy of Music.

Research project: Creating music on remote-controlled organs

Today's technology makes it possible for musicians to play instruments and with musicians who are on the other side of the globe. An artistic research project at Luleå University of Technology examines how the music and the interaction between musicians are affected by the new technological possibilities.
