VISA/5G
Vendor-independent substation automation over 5G.
Digitization in critical infrastructure brings special challenges and the need for new, reliable solutions. With 5G arises the possibility to create local private networks for secure and fast data exchange. In addition to higher security, higher reliability and lower delays, 5G offers a completely new environment for application developers where software can be dynamically executed in the cloud or closer to end users at the ”edge” of the network.
One of the major benefits of edge computing is the ability to execute time-critical protection and control applications on-premises. This combination of low latency and edge computing capabilities provided by 5G is very appealing for power systems protection and control. Both centralised and distributed automation architectures can be envisioned in this scenario, and a vendor independent approach can be explored.
This project will together with partners Hitachi Energy, IETV, Ericsson AB, Telia, Metrum, and Luleå University of Technology (LTU) demonstrate Vendor Independent Substation Automation over 5G (VISA/5G) in two scenarios: the LTU 5G testbed and edge computing cluster, and in a real Vattenfall substation.
