Matching logs to the right tree
The project has investigated the possibility of linking timber sorting data with harvest data at the individual level. The purpose of such an investigation is to achieve digital traceability from forest to saw. A linked data set has been collected and used to design algorithms for automatic linking of log sorting data and harvester data at the individual level.
Assuming that logs can be assembled into stems using log sorting data, about 16% of all stems with at least 3 sawlogs can be linked with high confidence in the two data sets. An algorithm for assembling logs into trunks using log sorting data has also been developed, but in its current form it is not considered to achieve sufficient performance. However, the potential to increase performance is still largely unexplored.
