Choices during your studies
Here you will find information on registering for courses, how to choose a specialisation, what happens if you don't choose a specialisation, optional and elective courses, and if courses you are interested in conflicts with each other.
Registration for courses
If you are a program student, the following applies
Information about the courses included in your programme is available in your programme syllabus. In most cases, you do not need to apply for compulsory courses, although there are some exceptions. Your compulsory courses will be visible in Ladok before the start of the semester.

Degree projects and vfu courses you may also need to apply for via antagning.se.
Log in to antagning.se. Under "Are you already a student?", select Luleå University of Technology and click "Continue to log in". You can then find the courses included in your programme and add the courses you wish to apply for.
The last day of registration for the fall semester is April 15 and for the spring semester is October 15.
Register in good time before the deadline! If you register late, you have no priority or guaranteed place!
Programme students should log in via antagning.se. Click Log in and, under "Are you already a student?", select Luleå University of Technology.
For security reasons, make sure you close your web browser after logging out so that no one else can access your application.
Please note: Remember to respond by the deadline (see the Important dates section on antagning.se).
If you do not respond by the deadline, your application will automatically be treated as a decline, and the course(s) you applied for will be removed from your application.
Specialisation selection
The education plan specifies if a program has specialization options. The choice of specialization is made either before the autumn or spring semester, depending on the program you are enrolled in.
The selection of specialization occurs during the application period, see below.

Changing Specialisation
You can apply to change your specialisation by contacting Service Point. Remember that you do not have priority for courses, and it may lead to an extended study period.
If you do not choose a specialisation:
- No course suggestions will automatically appear in Ladok for students.
- You will not have priority for courses.
- It may lead to an extended study period.

Elective space
An elective space means that you are free to choose courses offered by universities, corresponding to the number of credits allocated for this part of your programme. This allows you to tailor your studies according to your interests, career goals and/or undertake studies abroad.
If you choose to study abroad, the period must be at least six months of full-time study (equivalent to 30 ECTS credits).
You may also include previously completed courses in your elective space. Please note that this may result in a reduced study pace or periods without active study during this time.
For optional courses completed at a recognised Swedish higher education institution, you do not need to apply formally for credit transfer. Instead, you declare these courses in Ladok when applying for your degree certificate.
Courses with overlapping content cannot both be included in your degree. While course syllabus may indicate overlap, it is your responsibility to compare course content. If you are unsure whether courses overlap, you should contact the relevant examiner.
Optional courses at Swedish universities are applied for via antagning.se.
Choosing your courses
When selecting courses, consider:
- Your personal interests
- Whether you want breadth or depth in your degree
- Their relevance to your future career
- How they complement your main programme
Selectable space
Selectable space requires you to choose from a predefined list of courses specified in your programme syllabus. Elective components are compulsory and are marked as “elective” in your programme syllabus.

Entry Requirements
For courses available as optional choices for programme students at LTU, or listed as electives in your programme syllabus, eligibility is assessed as follows:
- First-cycle (undergraduate) courses: programme students are not assessed against specific entry requirements.
- Second-cycle (master’s level) courses: you must have completed courses of at least 90 ECTS credits, including at least 15 ECTS credits at Bachelor's level (G2F).
Information about the course level is available in the course syllabus.
Programme students applying for stand-alone courses are assessed according to the specific entry requirements stated in the course syllabus.
Make sure you are logged in as a programme student and use the correct application code when applying for optional or elective courses at LTU. It is recommended to apply via the student portal.
