FAQ for the farewell ceremony in Luleå
An invitation with a registration link and information about the ceremony was sent out in early February to final year students of the philosophy programmes who graduate in the spring semester of 2026. This applies to the programmes with Luleå or distance as study location.
The invitation was sent to the email address you have registered in Ladok.
Final year students of the technical programmes whose studies end in the spring semester of 2026 were invited to the farewell ceremony that was held in December 2025.
The dates for the farewell ceremonies are decided in consultation with the vice-chancellor, the student union presidents and Kulturens hus. The aim is for the ceremonies to take place at the end of the semester, but before the exam period.
Luleå University of Technology's farewell ceremonies are held twice a year in Luleå, once in May and once in December. Most of the programmes participating in May are philosophy programmes, while most of those participating in December are technical programmes.
The reason why those studying technical programmes – such as civil engineering, engineering and master's programmes – participate in the farewell ceremony during their second last semester is that many students tend to leave Luleå during the spring semester to work on their thesis.
The invitation was sent in early February to the email address you have registered in Ladok. If you did not receive an invitation by email, you can register directly via the registration link above no later than 1 March.
Yes, if you are at the end of your training.
During the farewell ceremony you will receive a thank you diploma, it is not a degree certificate. Once you have completed all the courses, you apply for a degree, which usually takes about 8 weeks to process.
The farewell ceremony is held in the Main hall (Stora salen) at Kulturens hus in Luleå city centre. Address: Skeppsbrogatan 17.
The Main hall is located upstairs from the entrance floor of Kulturens hus. The cloakroom is also located there.
There is a free cloakroom close to the Main hall in Kulturens hus. You and your guests can leave your outerwear and larger bags there.
Bags are allowed in the Main hall, but larger bags shall be left in the cloakroom.
Please be sure to arrive in good time as there may be a queue for the cloakroom, especially in winter.
The ceremony consists of music, speeches and the awarding of thank you diploma and LTU-pin.
There are university employees and student marshals on site to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
Here's how it works:
Guests and students should be seated ten minutes before the ceremony begins.
All students are seated by programme in alphabetical order by family name. You will receive an email at the beginning of the ceremony week with your seat number. It is very important that you sit in your assigned seats so that it matches the order of your personal diplomas when you are called on stage.
The ceremony starts with an academic procession. This means that the vice-chancellor, the moderator, the programme representatives and the student marshals march into the hall with flags. Then there are speeches before it's time for you students.
You will be given a signal by the staff when it is time for your row to go out to the aisle to the right of the seats (one row at a time). There, line up in the same order as you have been sitting. You walk up the right-hand stage staircase and up to the mark at the stage where a student marshal is standing.
When your name is called, you first go to the vice-chancellor, receive the thank you diploma and shake hands. After that, you walk up to the representative of your programme who hangs a ribbon with an LTU pin around your neck and shakes hands. You then turn to the audience, receive a warm round of applause and give your guests a chance to take a picture before leaving the stage.
You walk down the left stage staircase (as seen from the audience) and back to your seat.
Once all students have been thanked, the ceremony ends with an academic recession. This means marching out of the hall with flags. Then you students should join behind the student union president. More information will be given to you by the moderator.
After the ceremony, you will be photographed by programme, upstairs from the Main hall. Follow the instructions you will receive on site.
There are many participants, so there will be three ceremonies during the day. Each ceremony is expected to last approximately 1.5 hours.

Yes, you can bring a maximum of four guests. Guests must be registered in the registration form.
There are a limited number of seats in Kulturens hus. Once registration has closed, seats will be allocated so that everyone can be accommodated at each ceremony. Therefore, you cannot bring guests who are not registered.
If there is room for additional guests, information on how to register extra guests will be sent by email. If you have not received a confirmation from avslutningsceremoni@ltu.se, you cannot bring extra guests.
Students are seated with their class in reserved rows at the front. Other guests sit in the rows behind with free seating.
It is a long ceremony in Kulturens hus, up to two hours. It can be challenging for children to sit still and quiet for so long. We do not recommend bringing small children. If you choose to bring children, the person in charge of the child during the ceremony is responsible for ensuring that the child does not disturb the ceremony. Remember to sit far back so it is easy to leave the hall if necessary. If so, ask the staff on site when the programme you want to watch is due.
If there is a small child under the age of two and you choose to have the child on your lap, the child is not counted in the number of guests.
If you have a child in a stroller, you can (if space is available) stand at the wheelchair spaces at the back. Entrance via the left door to the Main hall marked "Parkett vänster". Please notify avslutningsceremoni@ltu.se if you wish to use this space.
The farewell ceremony is a formal event with the dress code "Kavaj" (Business suit/Semi-formal) for participating students.
The dress code is not a requirement, but a recommendation and guide. Please follow it to the best of your ability.
It's preferable that guests are also dressed up to honour the students and add to the festive feeling of the ceremony.
Students and guests are not seated together. As each programme is going on stage, students are placed with their group in reserved, labelled rows closest to the stage. Guests are seated in the rows behind with free seating.
Students will receive an email at the beginning of the ceremony week with your seat number. It is very important that you sit in your assigned seats so that it matches the order of your personal diplomas when you are called on stage.
There are a number of wheelchair spaces at the back of the Main hall in Kulturens hus. If you or any of your guests need a space for a wheelchair or a walker, please notify avslutningsceremoni@ltu.se when registering.
The wheelchair spaces are accessed via the entrance to the Main hall, which is labelled ‘Parkett vänster’. See the layout of the Main hall (scroll down to ‘Stora salen’): https://kulturenshus.com/om-oss/salongsskisser
The Main hall is located one floor up from the entrance level. There is a lift to the right of the stairs on the entrance level.
Immediately after the ceremony, a photographer hired by Luleå University of Technology will take group pictures of each programme (in the order in which you come on stage). You will be given information on how the photo session will be organised by the presenter during the ceremony.
The photographer also takes some environmental pictures during the ceremony, both of students on stage and in the rows of benches. These pictures are for university documentation and marketing purposes. Therefore, please note that far from all students will be captured in the environmental pictures.
A link to the group photos and the environmental photos will be posted on this page some time after the ceremony.
If you don't wish to appear in the photos, please contact avslutningsceremoni@ltu.se.
Read more about GDPR and how Luleå University of Technology processes personal data.
Photography during the ceremony is allowed from the respective seats. Avoid noisy or bulky cameras.
We live stream the ceremony in Kulturens hus. The camera will be pointed at the stage from the back of the hall. The audience will not be filmed.
A link to the livestream will be published on this website at a later date. You can share the link with family and friends who are unable to attend. The livestream can also be viewed afterwards for a period.
If you are participating on stage and do not want to be seen during the livestream, please contact avslutningsceremoni@ltu.se.

There is no fee for students or guests to attend the farewell ceremony at Kulturens hus.
If you also want to attend the student union banquet, which is a separate event requiring separate registration, there is a cover charge. Please contact the student unions if you have any questions about the banquet:
