Special examination rules
Double exam in hall
If you have two or more hall exams with different course codes scheduled for the same day, you must first register for all exams in Kronox External link, opens in new window..
You then supplement with an application to write double exams via the form below. This must be done no later than the last day of registration.
Please note that no extra writing time is granted, the writing time is the time that the longest exam has. Each exam has a maximum writing time and this remains the same. You cannot use five hours for a four-hour exam.
Examination at another location
Only students on programs at LTU with normal teaching form can be granted an exam elsewhere. (dnr 2377-2015)
The written exam must be carried out at the place of education. In exceptional cases, exams at another location may be allowed if there are strong reasons.
Please note that this does not apply to distance learning exams. If you are looking for information on distance exams, you can find it here.
Strong reasons include
- Own illness or military service that makes it impossible to travel to the regular place of education.
- You are in another location due to ongoing elements of your education, such as an internship, degree project or studies abroad.
- You have one (1) examination left, maximum three years after the last regular program semester.
- You conduct studies in accordance with the elite sports agreement (dnr 353-15).
Reasons 1, 2 and 3 must be supported by certificates (in Swedish or English):
Reason 1:
Illness must be supported by a doctor's certificate with a date. Military service is proven by the call-up documents from the Armed Forces.
Reason 2:
Internship, degree project and the like must be supported by a certificate from the company, the start and end dates must be clearly stated. Studies abroad must be supported by the admission letter from the host university in the country you are going to study, the date of the semester must be clearly stated. All certificates must be signed.
Reason 3:
The final exam must be supported by a certificate from your study counsellor.
Requirements for an approved examination site
You are responsible for contacting the desired examination venue and checking that they meet the requirements (see below). This should be done before you submit your application for an exam at another location to LTU.
The examination site must have approved examination supervision and premises. Approved examination supervision means that an invigilator must be present in the examination room during the entire writing time.
The examination venue must be a college, university, learning center or similar that conducts college or university studies.
The examination must take place on the same date and at the same time as the examination at the place of education. The examination time is always Swedish time.
Please note
If you are unable to attend, you are obliged to notify the examination venue and the institution giving the course. If this is repeated, you risk not being granted an exam at another location more than once.
You must pay any additional costs that may arise at the examination venue.
Examining at another location involves a risk on your part. If any mishap occurs, the institution does not take any responsibility for this. For example, the institution may not be able to contact the contact person, the exam may not arrive on time, or the exam venue may not be able to accommodate you if the exam is given in the afternoon or evening. The time of the exam is set only a week before the exam and some exam venues are not open in the afternoon or evening. It may be difficult to find a new exam venue at short notice.
Application form
Before completing the application form, you must have confirmation that the exam venue meets the requirements and that you can write the exam there on the date it is scheduled. The time will be determined at a later date. They try as far as possible to schedule them in the morning from 9.00 a.m. so you can give that time provisionally.
The application form must be received and stamped by LTU no later than the last application day for exams at another location, see below.
NOTE! A registration in Kronox for the current exam must be made. It is not enough to apply for an exam at another location.
Fill in the form on the computer, print (single-sided), sign and attach any certificates (reasons 1, 2 and 3). Send the application to: Luleå University of Technology, Registrar, 971 87 Luleå, Sweden. Mark the envelope with the course code.
Please note that we do not accept applications sent by e-mail.
Exceptions apply to those who at the time of application are abroad on an exchange, internship or thesis - according to a certified period of time. Please send a scanned, signed application to registrator@ltu.se with the certificate attached.
The department offering the course decides on the exam at another location.
You can only apply for the next examination period. It is therefore not possible to submit the form several months in advance as your information will then be out of date. Early applications will therefore be rejected.
Processing of personal data
The personal data you provide in your application is collected and used to contact you in case of any questions and to identify you at the time of the exam and for result reporting.
Luleå University of Technology retains and manages this personal data locally for the time needed to administer the current examination period, after which your application is archived centrally.
Your personal data is handled by the relevant department and disclosed to the examination venue you have applied to take the exam at. This is for administration and identification at the time of the exam.
For more detailed information on how LTU processes your personal data click here External link. LINK TO PROCESSING OF PERSONAL DATA/GDPR.

Last exam before graduation
If you have only one examination left before the degree can be taken, you may be given the opportunity to take an examination on one occasion.
This requires that all other examinations, including the degree project, are passed. You can get a certificate showing that this is the case from the study counsellor. The certificate can only be issued once. If you fail on this extra occasion, you must wait until the next exam in the course is given.
The application for an extra exam must be submitted at least one month in advance to the department.
Examination in courses that have been withdrawn from the curriculum
If you want to register for an exam on a discontinued course or for an exam that has been changed and you cannot find it in the exam registration, make a request in the contact form below before the deadline for registration.
Examination opportunities for discontinued courses must be given to such an extent that the student has the opportunity to complete their studies in a reasonable time.
The exam shall be given twice in the first year after the course is no longer offered. Thereafter, one exam is given per year for another two years after the course has been discontinued.
