Electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD)
Texture analysis with EBSD. Many metals have a texture as an effect of a processing and or manufacturing process. With the help of EBSD, you can study the crystal structure and its orientation in the material and in this way you can also examine the texture in the material.

Example of texture in additively manufactured material. a) IPF map, b) color key and c) IPF orientation.
Crack profile with EBSD
By studying a crack profile in detail, we can learn more about how the crack propagates in different textures, planes and directions. We can also get an idea of the influence of the microstructure on the crack progression.

Crack profile characterized by EBSD.
Analysis of grain boundaries
Through EBSD characterization, you can also analyses the grain boundaries in a material. Below are examples of how ultrasonic treatments (UST) of steel affect the microstructure.
In the EBSD software there are many possibilities for microstructure analysis. Here are examples of where twins and different types (angle) of grain boundaries are marked in the image.
