Fractographic examination in SEM
A common request in both industry and research is to find out what caused an accident. By studying the fracture surfaces and doing a so-called fractographic examination, information about the course of the fracture can be obtained.
Fractography can indicate microstructural deviations and demonstrate possible defects in the material, and with the help of EDS one can also investigate possible variations in chemical composition. Fractographic examination can also contribute to further material understanding after material testing (tensile testing, fatigue, creep, etc.).
