X-ray microtomography - studies of a face mask
A sample of size 2.4 x 3.2 x 1.4 mm (Width, Height, Thickness) was cut from the centre of a face mask and scanned using a 3D X-ray Microscope (Zeiss Xradia 510 Versa) at Luleå University of Technology (LTU). The sample comes from a new commercially available face mask of protection class FFP2.

Findings
The results show three different filter layers of varying fiber size distribution. The filter at left hand side (1) has a fiber diameter of approximately 20 𝛍m. The filter in the middle (2) has a finer microstructure with a fiber diameter of 5-10 𝛍m, while the filter at the right hand side (3) is coarser with a fiber diameter of roughtly 30 𝛍m. The spatial resolution in terms of voxel size is 3.7 𝛍m.
